Re: [Kraftwerk] The Mix! Is it an original album or not?
The Mix was a remix album, not an album of new songs. Ralf was commissioned with putting together a best of, and he decided to do so, but with an up to date feeling, and I give him credit for that, but in all honesty, to me The Mix sounds like a tour rehearsal. They just had new toys to practice with. Electric Cafe was truly their last album of new songs before TdF Soundtracks. I've read in this list that someone wanted Neon Lights out of an hypothetical The Mix II. I agree, but not because I dislike the song, much to the contrary, I love Neon Lights, it's just that such a masterpiece should be left alone, and not recreated at all. E PS: Jean Michel Jarre is about to release a sort of The Mix of his own, that is not an album of new songs, but remixed, recreated songs. His newest album, of newest songs is called Geometry of Love. Very sensual cover, BTW.

This has been delayed several months, maybe until Xmas or early next year.

Will be released on September 9th, if everything goes according to plans. glenn
I can't imagine Neon Lights being tampered with, though I've played the vinyl at 45 rpm (just once) and it's literally quite groovy. Amir Enrique Correa wrote:

I have to say I really don't agree with or understand this view. It seems too... I dunno... anti-progress for lack of a better word. I mean, if a song is great why mummify it? It's like ancestor worship or something. A great song should serve as the branching point for many great covers, remixes and reinterpretations. Honor it by playing with it, not by building a fence around it. Nobody will forget the original, and maybe some of the derivatives will also be great. -- /* Soleil */
I disagree with your disagreement :-) If the new electronica Neon Lights is a "superior recreation," call it *something else!* The tune is no longer a clone, or literal recreation. You cannot clone a good song and add bells and whistles to it without changing the identity of the original. The Mix changed the identity of all the songs they bastardized to run-of-the-mill lame techno. They followed their followers, a first for Kraftwerk. They should not have used any original names. Nobody is likely to get the Mix version of a song confused with the earlier version. Besides, the title isn't the song. It's just a label. It serves only as a way of naming a piece of music. Namespace collisions like that are bad in that they can cause confusion, but that says nothing about the music itself. At least they didn't give the Mix the same name as an earlier album. :) -- /* Soleil */
The Mix was programmed mostly by Karl Bartos. At least according to himself. Neonlights shouldn't be left alone, it should be destroyed. =) I'd love a cover by Einstürzende Neubauten or someone like that. / Petter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Enrique Correa" <enrique.correa@heraeusmtd.com> To: "'KW'" <kraftwerk@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 3:13 PM Subject: Re: [Kraftwerk] The Mix! "mostly" ??? *rotflol* anachronistic nonsense: *afair* Karl was not a Kraftwerk member any more since a while before the Mix was achieved...
;-))))
At least according to himself.
ok, naïve guys, but IF he really said that, I guess Karl MUST be a LIAR... ...OR perhaps, that was just the only way for him to tell that he did work a little on the Mix at a EARLY stage before quiting. (?)

woww... you don't say ! warf ! warf ! Sorry mate, but I easily imagine Ralf and Florian *rotflol* reading such a bold assertion ! *hehe* :-D euhhh, maybe, perhaps, ;-) _ /o o\ Filtre4Pole \ ~ / I I - -

Well, he definitely said it. I interviewed him, and recorded every last word. So you can take that as a solid fact. He left Kraftwerk 1990. Giving him four possible years since Electric Café to have programmed it. / Petter
We're not even talking early 1990 : he left the band after the November 1990 Italian shows, at which point KW had premiered almost every track they'd revamped for the album. And Ralf himself said The Mix is a 'live-in-the-studio' album : Karl is all over The Mix ; he just left the band before the record was released. ?? Why ? be sure R&F might assert the contrary... ;-) Well, what Karl told you is only what he wanted to say, his feeling, his opinion... (sincere or not, not necessarily true *btw*). Here is the plain fact: Karl left Kraftwerk when the Mix was under construction (=NOT achieved!) therefore he obviously COULDN'T be the *major worker* on this project.

...or rather to have *begin* to work on it, yes, I agree. That could mean he "programmed" a little on it (early), but certainly no MORE !! Maybe, perhaps, _ /o o\ Filtre4Pole \ ~ / I I - -
