Nit-pickin' chart numbers

/.../ I guess Frank Sinatra always had to sing New York, New York or else...
Sure, from an American perspective "Autobahn" is the only Kraftwerk recording to chart decently. However, back in Germany "Die Roboter" is their highest charting single. (Reaching #5 back in '78 - "Autobahn" only got as far as #9. Also, the '82 re-issue of "Das Model" passed "Autobahn", reaching #7 in Germany, and #1 in the UK - where "Autobahn" only got as far as #11 in '75.) As for most successful album, both "Autobahn" & "Computerwelt" reached #7 in the German album charts, and while "Autobahn" shifted some 450.000 copies in the US in its time, "Die Mensch-Maschine" sold 600.000 copies in Germany alone back in '78.(*) So, while a lack of "Autobahn" mightn't be enough to send bottles smashing into the precious Kling Klang set-up, a void of robots and models could. -- Champagne for my real friends. Real pain for my sham friends. (*) Main sources for this intel were the official Guinness books about British hits by Tim Rice, Paul Gambaccini and Jonathan Rice, the official Billboard books by Joel Whitburn, The Rock in Deutschland encyclopaedia, and the various books on Kraftwerk. You lil' nit-pickers, you...

Simply one thing: Even today every kindergarten kid can still sing "Autobahn". But nearly no one in Germoney remembers "Die Roboter". Even the much newer "Expo 2000" has completely fallen into oblivion. If a musical piece is still well-remebered nearly 30 years after it's release, a special quality must be inherent in it. I think it's called MAGIC. "Autobahn" has it. Jan -- feel free to visit http://www.jan-reetze.de

Eh...I agree that "Autobahn" has a kind of magic ;-) (and maybe listening to the 22min original version is better then smoking some kind of weed) but: don't forget "Das Model" - I think one of their best-known songs - thanks to the 'Neue deutsche Welle' - also to 'non kraftwerk' listeners. I'd beg to differ. Whenever you mention the name Kraftwerk to non-Kraftwerk-fans they always go (if they've heard of them at all) "ah, vee are ze robots". Seems to be the tune most closely linked to them at least here in the UK. And show me ONE kindergarten kid who can sing Autobahn! ;) Erik
As far as I see it, there are 4 KW songs that will always be played: Autobahn, TEE, Radioactivity, and Pocket Calculator. Signed, omegaChance http://www.mp3.com/omegaChance

Actually, I think there is a higher chance they would play "Musique Non-Stop" or "The Robots" than "Tour de France". -Eric On Fri, 23 Aug 2002, Geert Lemmens wrote:
