RE: [KLF] Chipping Norton : Live footage (was Deep Shit)
(resending because apparently I'm new to the internet and haven't quite figured out how to use it yet) I hate to say it, but I think the Quad analogy is probably right. I bought one of the first DVD-A/SACD combo players when it hit the market for a fair dollar, and it got great use, but I don't think I've purchased a new disc in WELL over a year. Granted, there were some fantastic releases early on, the support from retailers and labels were just not there. Likewise, the inherent flaw of the format is that it breaks with the traditional mass market applications of music by requiring a true sweet spot to really be of any good use. I was reminded of this the other day when I attempted to play a Billy Joel SACD while I was in another room doing dishes, and could barely hear the vocals. After checking behind the stereo to make sure all cables were attached, I realized the solution was simple... The vocals were rooted firmly in the center channel, which was aimed dead center of the couch. Listener location being anywhere outside that ruined the experience. That said, there are some fantastic homebrew 5.1 DTS mixes posted in alt.binaries.sounds.dts . They lose the fidelity of the DVD-A format, but they are sometimes sonically interesting regardless. -s- -----Original Message----- From: John Milne [mailto:john@highlandland.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: Friday, September 09, 2005 12:42 PM To: Shilo Maggi Subject: RE: [KLF] Chipping Norton : Live footage (was Deep Shit) Very true. I heard it myself when it first came out, and was suitably impressed. Although, that's two years ago now ... and a full three since "Yoshimi" first appeared on normal CD. Nothing seems to have happened in the format since then (apart from lots and lots of DVD soundtracks, of course). Is it, perhaps, the Quadrophonic Sound of the 2000s? John

I'm likely to agree with you there. Sadly, it seems that the 5.1 music format was practically stillborn, with a few notable exceptions.
Anyone looking to really hear with the format can do should really check out the DVD-A release of The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots". While the mix may be a bit gimmicky at moments, it really explores what the format can do.

DVD-Audio is yet to be explored in any way, I think. The BBC recently released its first radio show on the format (the first new series of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy") - and if 5.1 can be used for anything it must be (a) ambient music and (b) radio drama (both of which collide with Arthur Dent and his galacic wanderings!)
