Re: 100 best singles of the 90s
Okay, here's what I think of the list ...
1. PULP - Common People "...no contest..." (really? what about "Razzamattaz"?) 7. TEENAGE FANCLUB - The Concept (a bit stodgy compared to "Starsign", maybe?) 18. FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON - Papua New Guinea (especially the Weatherall mix) 40. McALMONT AND BUTLER - Yes (last train to nostalgia) 42. THE KLF - Last Train To Trancentral (life, the universe and everything) 45. THE BETA BAND - Los Amigos Del Beta Bandidos (the "Patty Patty Sound" has the edge, I think) 50. BLUR - Girls And Boys (Oasis were always rubbish. Rock'n'roll is middle class to the core) 63. SPACEMEN 3 - Big City (at ten minutes, isn't it too long to be a REALLY good single?) 69. FLOWERED UP - Weekender (see above) 73. PULP - Razzmatazz (Number 73? Number 2, surely!) 75. THE JUSTIFIED ANCIENTS OF MU MU - It's Grim Up North (Number 1) 87. SPICE GIRLS - Wannabe (Surely this stuff hasn't stood the test of time, has it?) 88. SUEDE - The Drowners (And neither has this)
Nice to see the Magnetic Fields, the Auteurs, Smog, the Palace Brothers and Spiritualized mentioned (even if the wrong song was chosen every time!) And my own, just top five, would be: 5. Guided By Voices - I am a Scientist 4. Underworld - Rez 3. Slint - Glenn/Rhoda 2. Pulp - Razzamattaz 1. The JAMMs - It's Grim Up North. Sorry if this post is too large! John
