I will be in London for one week (or at least this is what my plans say) in September. Are there any cool record shops I should check out?
Berwick street. Several cool shops down there, including Sister Ray. Off Leicester Square there is a tiny little shop in one of the alleys I found myself hanging out at for nearly an hour. At Notting Hill there are three Music and Video Exchanges, one in particular had a lot of cool rare stuff. Also a Rough Trade. Oxford Street HMVs are HUGE. Even a few booties there. Tower Records at Picadilly Sq. *** These are the places I hit on a recent vist. Not a lot of KLF stuff, tho, if that's your primary. Make sure the credit card is nice and light... -paul Are you unknowingly spreading the Klez worm? Check your system! http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.e@mm.html =========================================================== Currently in rotation: Pet Shop Boys - Aurally 3; Presidents of the USA - Pure Frosting; Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman; Stray Cats - Choo Choo Hot Fish
I second Paul's recommendations - Berwick St and Oxford St HMV will keep you busy for hours. There's a record shop every few yards on Berwick St. Rough Trade is well worth a visit and Blackmarket Records (near Berwick St) is good too. Sister Ray usually have a few KLF bits (is the AWTIL picture disc still there for 120 quid?) but nothing amazing, and it's all overpriced. There are tons of other shops obviously, but not in such high concentration as around Soho and the West End. On Sun, Aug 04, 2002 at 10:06:10AM -0400, TheMgnt@aol.com wrote:

Hi all and Thomas particularly,
Sister Ray usually have a few KLF bits (is the AWTIL picture disc still there for 120 quid?) but nothing amazing, and it's all overpriced.
Was in there today (attracting nasty looks from the guys behind the counter because I was dripping water after being caught in a sudden downpour.) They currently have a few 12" singles of 3am Eternal, Downtown, etc. for 15 quid each. Probably 7 or 8 mixed singles in total. There's the KLF Ultra Rare Trax CD for about the same price and the bootleg Space CD too. I think the AWITL Picture Disc was priced at ?100. They have a fair smattering of Orb/System 7 stuff too at the moment.
At Notting Hill there are three Music and Video Exchanges, one in particular had a lot of cool rare stuff.
I think there are five MVEs on Notting Hill Gate actually. You want to go upstairs for the rare stuff. (This is in the "Rock and Indy" shop, of course.) Last time I was there they had a fair selection of stuff, including Kalevala singles and some other rare bits. Similarly pricey like Sister Ray, and you could probably find all the stuff there for a cheaper price if you had the time to spend looking. They also have quite a bit of Orb et al. Lots of ZTT in their "bargains" section too if that's your taste. Note that there are lots of MVE (Music and Video Exchange) shops along Notting Hill Gate, each with a different focus, but there's also a "bargain bin" shop around the corner in Pembridge Road that has a lot of CD singles, etc. at prices usually less than a pound each, bit totally unsorted so be prepared to spend time browsing! If there's stuff missing from your collection I think you should come over with a fixed spending limit and go for it. At least buying in person you're not going to be hit for postage like you would on an eBay transaction. There are Rough Trade stores on Talbot Road, Notting Hill Gate (just off the Portobello Road markets) and also on downstairs inside a Skate Shop in Neals Yard, Covent Garden. Good for obscure Indy and alternative stuff, but I find them a bit chaotic. Not much KLF stuff these days either. (http://www.mveshops.co.uk/, http://www.sisterray.co.uk/ and http://www.roughtrade.com/ all have maps on their sites.) Here endeth the tourist guide... Michael
