No, that person didn't send you a virus. These days e-mail viruses & worms always spoof the 'from' fields, as well as the 'to' fields, by which I mean they use various methods to steal e-mail addresses and randomly use them in the 'from' field of any copies it sends out. This is because many servers now automatically reject messages that don't have a valid 'from' address. Usually they search Outlook Express address books, but the last big one that did the rounds would search every text & html file on an infected computer's hard drives for any e-mail addresses & use them for both the 'to' & 'from' fields when it spread itself. That means if you have your e-mail on a web page, it can be farmed from the temporary internet files of anyone who's visited that web page. You may well find others are getting copies of this crap which are pretending to come from you. I've had about 50 copies in the last few days. Luckily I refuse to use Outlook Express, so I'm immune to most of the bloody things anyway. My biggest problem is that my e-mail domain has been spoofed by spammers in the same way, & I get literally hundreds of bounce messages every day of spam, which claims to be from me, which has been sent to dead e-mail addresses. This of course means that literally millions of people are receiving spam which looks like it came from me. :o( Dave Brzeski

RM: What's you FTP server running? If you're running IIS (which I'm guessing you are), make sure you download the latest security patches from http://www.microsoft.com/security/ ASAP. Dave's comments are quite right - this latest virus doing the rounds spoofs the mail header making it look like you've sent someone a virus - that person then contacts you (or complains to your ISP) causing it to spread even more. At the moment, the current nasty is "mydoom" (or "novarg"), I've had about 50 attempts on my mailbox in the last couple of hours alone - read the following for more info: http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/mydoom.asp C
I run Serv-U, not IIS. Thankx for the INFO. OK folks....calm down.... The chances are that its the MyDoom virus that works by scanning infected computers for e-mail addresses (anything, not just those listed in an address book, it'll scan the temp internet files and find them, any messages in your inbox, outbox, folders etc) and use them as the "from" address when it propagates further. Example: Person A surfs to my website which lists my e-mail address (info@car15.com). Person B is infected with the MyDoom virus and unintentionally e-mails it (ie as a result of the virus infection) to Person A. Person A opens the e-mail and infects their computer. The virus scans the data on the computer of Person A and finds my e-mail address in the temp internet files. Person As now infected computer propagates the virus to the any e-mail addresses that can be found on the computer and potentially uses my e-mail address as the "from" address. Thus Person C receives a copy of the virus, and the e-mail it arrives attached to purports to have been sent from me, despite the fact that I didn't send it. Hope this explains things (I might not be exactly correct, but that's the general concept!) Thus Person C receives a copy of the virus, and the e-mail it arrives attached to purports to have been sent from me, despite the fact that I didn't send it.
I want to add that Person A keeps receiving mails claiming that they could not be delivered, without ever sending one at all... :-/ Guess as soon as you are in someone's address book, you are a potential "virus sender". ..::// Thomas Touzimsky A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?
Hi all, Can anyone tell me whether I'm doing something wrong with my approach to the list? I seem to be getting emails which suggest that they represent a late stage in an exchange which I have not seen the earlier parts of - if you know what I mean. A case in point is Thomas' recent post which arrived without me having seen the message that he was replying to. Perhaps I've enrolled on a sawn-off version of the complete list. Is this possible? On to, I hope, less boring issues. I saw some traffic late last year about organising another fan remix kompetition. Did that project get off the ground? It sounds like a great idea to me and I, for one, would certainly be up for submitting something. Take care, Angus
