Man, wish I had this thing 10 years ago...definitely going on my shopping list: http://tinyurl.com/yol3la There are now two turntables on the market that that hook to computers. One of them has a USB cable and the other one has a built-in pre-amp and a lineout. I've got so many 12" singles that are lined up in my cabinets that nobody's ever bothered to put on the internet. jr ----------------------------------------- Jeremiah "Spassvogel" Rickert 6'7" 350 lbs of Dr. Pepper and Pez Candy. -----------------------------------------
why not get one of those ART phono preamps with USB interfaces (ART USP Phono Plus) and use your existing deck. Jeremiah Rickert wrote:

My existing deck is kaput...but if anyone has a turntable they're happy with, you're right that getting a preamp for it would work nicely :D jr
also a lot of people try to connect their turntable directly to their PC, forgetting that you can connect it to your amp in the usual way, then connect line out or tape out to your PC...although not as loud or clear a signal as CD, the amp boosts the phono signal quite a lot...hell that's how we made old mix tapes back in the day after all =) tbc. One problem with using your stereo instead of a separate pre-amp, is that if you have cable-TV hooked up to your VCR, for example, and your VCR hooked to your home theater, then you will get a hum. I can't tell you how often I grabbed a track back in the bad old good old days of napster and heard the hummming/buzzing. It was a pain to unscrew the cable every time I wanted to record a record. (hehe, typing record a record amuses me for some reason). I like these USB units, or the one with the built-in pre-amp because it just cuts down on the wires and the amount oc circuits that the signals are traveling through. Anyway, looks like a cool unit. I'll probably by one as soon as I pay off my computer :D jr
There will always be some sort of interference that creeps into the recording. Another way to fix this is to record the line noise as a wave and create noise profile from that wave. Then apply noise reduction to your song using the line noise profile. As long as you don't get too aggressive with the reduction it should clean up nicely. I bought the Stanton ST100 with digital out. To get straight to the point don't use the digital out unless you want to lose all the highs and lows. It is because the built in digital converter has some sort of auto leveling that you cannot turn off. It is designed to keep the audio novice from creating audio files with clipping that can damage your speakers. The problem is you end up with really flat wave files that also sound really flat. You are better off using the analog out and letting your PC do the digital conversion. They don't mention this anywhere in the manual either. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. http://img411.imageshack.us/my.php?image=depecheprecious0020yd.jpg http://img411.imageshack.us/my.php?image=depecheprecious0032kk.jpg On the plus side it's a solid turntable with a built in pre-amp so you can plug it directly into your PC if you want.
