IMHO, the first 3 are the best. The rest is not that good... I've always bought the enigma albums without first listening to them. Btw, the DVD "remember the future" is also worth buying. Maarten

I agree. I had the first three CD's, which at the time sounded perfect for me, but as soon as the fourth album came out, I sold them all...I personally best liked the 2nd album as a whole. The third had some really magic moments, but looking back, I feel that something was missing there... And those oversampled Camrina Burana sounds, used by everyone, and THEN Cretu jumped on the bandwagon too... I remember when one half of Coldcut was asked about their most embarrassing part of record collecion, and he said it must be "anything by Enigma". At the time I found it upsetting, but, again, looking back I should agree with him. At the time I thought it was deep with mysticism and stuff, and musically it may still sound OK, but after listening to other bands, Cretu's work just not cutting it. The KLF/early Orb had more ambient feeling and hit singles for the mind, body and soul. Death In June has more mysticism. Laibach has more fanfares. Coil has mmuch more experimentalism. And, while Cretu has a little bit of everything on his music, it may be OK, but he's mostly repeating himself, and on the esoteric side, he's like Dan Brown in literure: the hermit/artist anyone an relate to, he's (all too) normal and business-minded...yet shallow. Plus (on the negative side), Creatu was behind Goombay Dance Band (among others), you know. Giorgio Moroder he is not, I think...

weird - serious talk about enigma. guess this would be the place for it, though. :) Quoting klfboy _ <klfboy@hotmail.com>:

i actually like the first two a lot, but i didn't even bother with the third. i remember picking up the first single from the third album, and there was a big disclaimer in the liner notes that said, iirc, "THERE WILL BE NO DERIVATIVE REMIXES FROM THIS ALBUM" and i thought "pff, well then why would i buy it?", because...
I personally best liked the 2nd album as a whole.
...i thought the first one was very definitely a good "pure" album start to finish, but the second had some embarrassing album tracks. the second, on the other hand, had far, far better singles and remixes than the first. MCMXC A.D. (really a great album title) has nothing on it i skip, and parts of it still give me the ol' spine-tinglies (i.e. when the music/vocals kick in on "rivers of belief"). second album has some ridiculous over-the-top moments (guitar solo on "i love you, i'll kill you" - that thing is like, what, 2 minutes long?!) and some real cheesy tracks ("silent warrior"). that being said, i like it, but it is cheesy, y'know? ;) remixes from the second album were flat-out awesome, and "eyes of truth" and "carly's song" are easily two of the best tracks from that era of electronic music.
Plus (on the negative side), Creatu was behind Goombay Dance Band (among others), you know.
yeah, but his work with hubert kah was damn good. i love those records. micah stupak benthic recordings : soundings from unexplored places micah@benthic.cc .. www.benthic.cc ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
well, whoever was complaining about the recycling aspect of some Enigma tracks will be well impressed with the first track off A Posteriori :-) so far, i don't mind the 6th album. i've not objected to anything yet, although it'll take a few more listenings, particularly on the ipod, to work out if i like the album lots, or if it'll just be there to complete the collection as for the previous albums: - MCMXC AD - like everyone else, it's a great album. it sounds dated now perhaps, but probably because i played it so much in the early 90s. mea culpa is still fantastic played loud - The Cross of Changes - i seem to be one of the few people who never really liked this album. i only really like Eyes of Truth and Carly's Song - Le Roi Est Mort Vive Le Roi - i liked this album a lot, mainly because i really like TNT For the Brain, Why and Roundabout a lot - The Screen Behind the Mirror - again, i wasn't disapointed by this album either - i like the pace of Push The Limits, Silence Must Be Heard, Gravity of Love (i mostly like listening to Sandra's vocals) and Camera Obscura gives me that spine tingle that i also get in Rivers of Belief - Voyager - i've tried really really hard to like this album. to even find one track i really like. but so far, i've yet to find it. i suspect Cretu realised he was getting flak for the sameyness of the previous albums, and so tried something different - but it doesn't work the new album though, it's interesting. stand out track so far has to be The Alchemist - very Jarre-ish Feel Me Heaven i like too (although again, easy to say it's a bit Equinox Part 4or5 - maybe i've just got JMJ tracks on my mind this evening) i think most of the first 2/3rds of the album i'll end up liking - the rest i'll probably skip though and yes, TAAW really needs a 2nd album - or a re-release of the Axel F track with Pulstar on the b-side.
I really like the DVD as I have had it for several years and "push The Limits" is a good video and track as well. I think that he has his style as do many others and it works for him and his fans. Did no the fans of the Orb get upset when they changed from the 1and 2 albums to like Orblivion? Big change and their scene was blown away fro their earlier stuff. I think that his music set the scene for a lot of the latter bands in that genre. Has anyone heard the new album?
Not yet, but I fear it just sounds like another collection of b-sides (just like Voyageur did before). The third Enigma album was the best in my opinion. Cretu should rather sit down and release a second TAAW record.
