I bought myself the new (in Germany at least) Kosheen maxi "Hungry", but thanks to paranoid publishers, I am cursed with their copy protection, making it impossible for me to record the tracks on the CD to mp3. Are CDs in the UK copy protected as well ? If not, I would order my CDs from the UK from now on... (what had the advantage that, unlike Germany, the UK stores sell both discs of a 2disc set, so it is easier to get all the mixes) --- Thomas Touzimsky same shit // different day

The big record companies (such as BMG) are starting to put copy protection on all CDs, which means they won't play in many portable and car CD players. This is an acceptable fault apparently, since it stops piracy, so it's ok to stop genuine listeners who've paid for it from listening to their own damn album. I doubt UK CDs will be different. jon (who's disgusted with the way digital rights management is going) -- "ABROAD, adj. At war with savages and idiots. You might want to take a look at this article, all about BMG now producing "broken" CDs: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/27960.html Thanks Craig
Somebody told me that the new Phil Collins CD is protected in the UK, but they've done something interesting to make sure that you can listen to (a version) of the music on a PC (not a Mac as far as I know). What they've done is make a CD-ROM portion and put a compressed audio file on it that contains all the album tracks and there is a player application to play it and it will only work with the original CD. Strange but true. My Pioneer DVD-ROM drive on my PC will quite happily rip copy protected CDs, but my Teac CD-RW locks up if it sees one. I came across three or four different CDs so far that got the same feature. Somehow, this allows me to still record mp3s from the original tracks... --- Thomas Touzimsky same shit // different day ----- Original Message ----- From: "Simon Daw" <simon@antmusic.fsnet.co.uk> To: <klf@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 8:45 PM Subject: Re: [KLF] [ot] Copy protection
