Hi, everyone, Thanks very much for so many interesting and varied points. Of course, there will always be arguments about where the festival is held, and when. All I can say about that is - it's not MY festival, if it happens; it's ours! It can be held anywhere and at any time, and include any number of bands, DJs, art events, etc. etc. It shouldn't be too much like a "Wicker Man" festival rip-off - although certain Celtic/pagan influences, and an Illuminati edge could be interesting. And it should also reflect the broad spectrum of Drummond and Cauty fandom, from those who go clubbing every night, to those who just want to see the films; from those who are 1990s nostalgia-heads, to those who study Drummond academically and only ever see "shrooms" on cans of soup. ;-) I have a few points to make, and one BIG suggestion, but please note, if this is going to come about, it should be relatively convenient for all - and above all FUN!!! (a) Jura might be out as a venue, certainly in August (high tourist season). Apart from the midge problem, there are big nasty landowners (does anyone know if Jimmy Cauty's schoolfriend - the one who let them use his ground for the filming of "Waiting" - still owns land of the island?) who might demand HUGE amounts of money. Plus, it is VERY difficult to get to unless you have oodles of money to pay on ferry fairs, etc. (b) August 23rd (aside from being a Monday next year) coincides with the Edinburgh Festival, which may or may not detract from people coming to our festival. (c) I like the May suggestion very much - but can I modify it slightly? Wherever you hold it (unless it's in a big city) you could have the problem of the locals descending upon the Festival and ruining it. This has happened before with outdoor raves, certainly in Scotland. However, at least one small festival has come up with a solution: the Stonehaven Folk Festival. They hold their event every year on the same weekend as the Scottish open-air rock festival "T in the Park", which means that all the local idiots and hooligans are away at THAT festival, and so don't bother theirs. (Apologies to anyone who's going to "T in the Park" this weekend, but you know what I mean!) This would mean we could hold it on the second weekend in July - although, though would mean that flights to and from the UK would be more expensive that in May. (d) FINALLY ... A VENUE. Please note, this is MY suggestion only. There are probably millions of others. But for what it's worth ... here it is: Tarlair Open-Air Swimming Pool, in Macduff, Banffshire, Scotland. Macduff is a town that actually features in a KLF lyric, in "Prestwich Prophets Grin" on JAMSLP2: "The rest of the crew were all Buckie men/ But the skipper was from Macduff". Tarlair is a fantastic venue. It's actually about a mile outside the town, cushioned by two-hundred foot high cliffs all around, and with a golf course (on top of the cliffs) between it and the nearest houses. No one would hear us. It's an old, 1930s open-air swimming pool, that has been disused since 1996. It is right on the shore and even has a flat stretch of land that would be excellent for camping. Even better, it has been used for concerts before - a big folk music festival in 1993, Wet Wet Wet, and even Whitesnake (!) in 1998. Since then, the only people to use it have been the Banff and District Model Boat Club (but the old sluice can still be raised, and the pool becomes bone dry). It's currently owned by Aberdeenshire Council, who I think would be extraordinarily pleased that someone wanted to do something with it - plus, I used to work for them, so should be able to persuade them - hopefully! Also, there is an airport in Aberdeen 45 miles away, that has major links with most European cities. The only downside is there is no rail link from Aberdeen to Banff - but at least there's no ferry! A photo of Tarlair (with the sluice down, and the sea in) can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/klfestival2004/ Some might argue that I mention this as venue because it's only 20 miles away from where I live, rather than 12,000, as it will be for some list members. I appreciate that - but then, I'm very unlikely to know about disused swimming pools in Auckland, am I? Anyway, I shall return to the list in 3-4 weeks time. Then we can start getting the ball rolling, if people want ... But please note, I'll be doing the rest of my teacher training next year, so may not be able to devote a huge amount of time to it, sadly. John
