I've heard that one – I definitely thought it was overaggressive noise reduction from recording a vinyl pressing. As to the ending, it felt swapped in from something, maybe the Live @ Oz version of WTIL?
I have another mystery from rutracker, thanks to the same gentleman who posted
those fake promo CDs.
He posted a torrent with two versions of the Space album on it:
https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5003797
Just to preface, I personally only own the 1993 bootleg CD and the 1995
bootleg vinyl. They're exactly the same, other than the fact that the vinyl
cuts off the "10" in the opening countdown (you can only hear part of the echo
of it).
One of the items in the torrent purports to be the original 1990 CD, but it is
in fact, other than a slight sample offset difference, an exact copy of my
38:21 bootleg CD from 1993 spurious clicks in the left channel from 0:26 to
0:29, and a click at 37:37. I asked on Discogs, and other people with this CD
do not have the 0:26 clicks (I didn't ask about the other). So it seems he got
my rip, which I had shared on Souleek, burned it to CD-R and re-ripped it, and
is pretending it's the original CD. OK, fine, whatever.
The mystery is the other version of Space in the torrent. It purports to be
the 1993 bootleg, but it's certainly not. It's a 38:57 sonically processed
version, possibly a vinyl rip with excessive noise reduction.
It's hard to describe what the extra processing sounds like, but it makes all
the swooshy noises (like the passing car sound at 24:30 and the ocean at the
end) sound "hollow" and resonant. There's also significant added harmonics,
e.g. the bassy part at 1:40 is kinda buzzy. The left & right channels are also
swapped, as compared to my bootlegs.
The real mystery is the extra 36 seconds of running time. There is a brief gap
at the side switch around 19:00, but the main reason for the extra length is
that it has a different, longer outro: the dolphin/ocean sounds continue for a
bit longer, and to my surprise, the "whirling" synth sound (the one that's
around 2:00) fades in for the last 47 seconds.
So now, setting aside the strange sonics, I am wondering what the deal is with
this extended outro. Is it that way on the original, official releases? And
what are their running times?
Mike
