Drummond after new sound of the streets By Alex Kasriel, thisishertfordshire.co.uk It was never going to be a traditional gallery. And in true Britart style, the people behind the new artsdepot in North Finchley are making sure the season kicks off with the most puzzling exhibition they could think of. Bill Drummond, maverick artist and founder of the pop band experiment KLF, has been invited to put on a show called How To Be An Artist. Previous Drummond pranks include burning £1million on camera (the proceeds made from his band KLF) and burying $20,000 which he earned from selling 20,000 fragments of a work by Richard Long. Now, he is seeking 17 men with loud, tuneful voices to take part in his latest scheme a short film featuring a journey from The Bull in High Street, Barnet, to artsdepot at Tally Ho Corner, North Finchley. The purpose of the journey is to advertise the show with a sign attached to Drummond's Land Rover. The noise of the engine will be recorded and used as the blueprint for the male voices to emulate for the film's soundtrack. Baffled? Drummond earnestly explains his artistic motivation in true postmodern style: "This started from the fact that, often when I'm driving along, I start imagining a choral soundtrack that goes with the sound of the engine. "There isn't a particular meaning. It's not for me to think about it before I do it. "The artist has to respond to his own impulses. If there are meanings, that is something that other people have to see afterwards." This latest project is a repeat of a similar journey Drummond made from Hull to Liverpool. "I knew it was taking a risk. I didn't know what was going to come out of it. "The process was very enjoyable for everyone involved. And everyone didn't know what it was going to lead to. It's more the actual doing that is the interesting part." In that case, Barnet's gallery visitors have got off lightly. While it takes only 15 minutes to travel from Barnet to North Finchley, travelling the breadth of the country makes for a rather longer film. Applicants who wish to take part in the film do not need to have had any formal choral singing experience. The recording takes place at the artsdepot, Tally Ho Corner, North Finchley, between 7pm and 9pm on October 6.
