i love this thread :) who knew bill was so bitter... (har har) as a long-time producer, i think bill is just repeating the very same thing that i've felt all along: the dj's only job is to soke up the glory that the traditionally face-less producer fails to claim. i think things are finally changing after the longtime dominance of the dj throughout the 90s... the new electro-clash thing (which will hopefully stop seeming so fad-like and start actually sounding GOOD... look for Bobby Peru, FPU or Selway to see the hope that i've seen) is producing a lot of producers who are actually releasing ALBUMS rather than just 12inches, press kits rather than just demos, and names that actually appear on more than one release. last weekend i bore witness to dave ralph spinning to an empty dancefloor (NOT kidding). i think by now we've almost completely cleared the crest of the dj movement, but who knew bill would have been so right? -tom ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Parker" <James.Parker@flgroup.co.uk> To: "'All bound for Mu-Mu Land.'" <klf@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 8:53 AM Subject: RE: [KLF] The DJ Backlash Starts Here
Great posting. Wise words from Bill in this era of Oakey, Tongy and the really infurriating pretty boy Fergie. While i think it very unlikely that we can reverse this trend much , maybe it would be fun to see if the list members have some suggestions for how we could carry out Bill's backlash. I thought of a new club/bar concept. It would be a giant jukebox rigged up to the club PA that has virtually all the tunes you could ever imagine and allows people to basically pick their own music for the dancefloor. Perhaps with these new gizmo's that can mix for you it could have ago for you to, maybe creating instant bootlegs on the fly.
What do you reckon? Any other ways we can eradicate the need for DJ's?
James
