The same story can be found in Matthew Collin's
book "Altered State - The Story of Ecstasy Culture and Acid House".
According to Collin, the rave happened on 30 September 1989, in a "muddy
field in Oxfordshire" and was called "Helter Skelter". The performers
- which included Bill and Jimmy, Ce Ce Rogers and Loretta Holloway - had to
climb up a rickety ladder to play on the back of a flat-bed lorry. The KLF
were given a fee of 1000 Scottish pound notes, "upon each of which they
scribbled the message 'we love you children' before throwing them to the
crowd". (Matthew Collin, "Altered State", page 106 - the only reference in
the entire book to the KLF, bizzarely). About 4000 people attended the
rave, and despite the drizzle, "the mood was elevated". On the same night,
incidentally, another rave in South London was the site of a battle with
police which resulted in seven officers being
hospitalised.
