Tom, here's my perspective on the trance thing.
i got into the dance music thing more and more from the summer of 1990 onwards. I'd missed out on the KLF circa 87-88 but got into them after the onslaught on the charts during 90-1. After getting into the ambient music of Chill out, The ORb, Banco De gaia, System 7 i started looking for something a little bit more uptempo and beaty, namely what was being called trance in the dance press.
The excellent Vibes (dance music) section in NME was my bible as it featured many of the upcoming artists and loads of 12". It was often edited by Kris Needs (Secret Knowledge) and Sherman both who were big players on the DJ scene around london at the time. Reviews would often refer to trance as a description for the music of labels like MFS, Sabres Of Paradise, Hard Hands, Rising High, Eye Q at al. Generally their sounds were a blending of the ambient world music samples and harmonic synths but with a techno tempo and hardness. i bought a compilation in 1991 on React (it may have been one of their first) called 'Trance, Explorations in Progressive House, Tribal Dub and ???' Featuring artists like React 2 Rythmn, Drum Club, Age Of Love & Bizarre Inc it was a good summation of the trance sound at the time, much less defined and more encompassing than it became in the late 90's during its second coming. There was a lot more tribal sounds in the mix back then. If anything the second coming in 98-9 was a sound more akin to goa trance and acid techno, (utilising those teeth-grating wasps-in-a-jamjar synth arpeggios) which didn't emerge until 93-4 from clubs like 'Return to the Source' and the other UV day glo trance clubs scene developing in south London.
