Yup, Jimmy's tune sounds like a straight remix of the theme to the 1969 movie "The Love Bug" to me. I would also think that Jimmy, with his love of anthromorphic American cars will number on them, may well have had a soft spot for Herbie when he was a kid!
Oh, and Simon, a quick shufty round Google should show up a few "Red Hand Gang" facts, and even the theme tune as an mp3 (thanks to TV Cream). My memories of it are hazy (check here for other people's similar recollections: http://www.culttelly.co.uk/rhgmem.html) but I do recall one character (called Peter?) who used to whistle tunes through a hollowed out sweet potato. And, of course, that the show was very popular in Ulster.
