Nice question John
Alternative history version A:
1993: Black Room is released: financial disaster. Bill and Jimmy are on
the dole. No solstice ceremony on Jura, and no money burning either.
They had their moment in music history, and as Don Lucknow predicted in
1987, they are thrown away by the music press. Everett True disses them
in Melody Maker. They retire with no further releases. A best of
compilation appears to fill their contract with record companies who
hoped for another Justified and Ancient-like hit. The compilation
bombs.
1997: Prodigy rips off Black Room. HUGE success. Everybody realizes
KLF's genius. The compilation is re-released, with new tracks forced by
the record companies. It disappears frm the shelves. Re-released. B+J
are put on a reunion tour. They even recruit Wanda D. They are
re-nominated for yet another Brit Award (this time they share it with
The Five)! They decide to do a live version of America: What Time Is
Love!!! The crowd's excited, and they think B+J are back to their old
tricks when they walk onstage with Extreme Noise Terror, with machine
guns and even a tank. They crowd is in for a surprise, however, because
for this time our heroes will not be firing blanks, but real bullets.
Alternative history version B:
1993: Black Room is released: SUCCESS! B+J decide to do more
"progressive" techno. Their avantgarde experiMENATLism reaches bigger
peaks than Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and even the Orb. They are
deifinitely NO FUN anymore, but keep on releasing albums, which have
nothing to do with their wildly creative firs five years.
1997: Prodigy rips off Blac Room. Even greater success than BR.
1999-2007: Prodigy rips off their progressive period.
Et cetera et cetera ad nauseum.
Oh, sorry for the crappy stories. That's all I could come up with. I
think their history is just as good as it is now. Thank God they never
did such humourless and boring things as later did Aphex, Orbital,
Prodigy or the Orb. KLF were never boring...
At least The KLF knew when to stop.
