Each week, a new lecture will focus on an artist or artwork that was once highly-regarded, but which — through the accidents of history or changes in aesthetics tastes — has since become obscure. Exploring each work within the oeuvre of the artist and the larger context of the period, the lecture will attempt to re-establish an appreciation for those artists who deserve to be remembered for their contributions.

All lectures on Wednesday evenings from 4:30 - 5:30pm, at the Beaux Arts Academy. Forgotten Masters Lectures Series Course Description for Wednesday, April 8th This week, I will discuss the work and influence of the forgotten master painter Carolus Duran (French, 1837 - 1917). A child genius, Duran trained in France and Rome. When he returned, he quickly became the preferred portraitist of European royalty and the heads of industry and government (e.g. Equestrian Portrait of Mademoiselle Croizette, see below). After becoming a professor a the Ecole des Beaux Arts (Paris) he became less prolific — and remembered — in his own work. As a teacher, Duran defined a generation of artists, including John Singer Sargent and Thomas Eakins, who imitated and prolonged his style. While looking at key works from his oeuvre, we will explore French high society in the era of Eiffel's Tower and Hugo's Les Miserables.

The school is located at 329 Rio Grande Street. If you go west on 3rd South, turn on Rio Grande - between 400 West and 500 West - then there is an alley, behind Homewood Suites.
