Mayor Honors Italian-American Heritage Month

Activities and Films to be Offered Throughout October

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker will signal the beginning of Italian-American Heritage Month in Salt Lake City on Friday, October 1 at 9:30 a.m. in the Mayor’s Office at the City & County Building, 451 South State Street.  The Mayor will meet with Italian-American leaders and sign a proclamation recognizing the month-long celebration.

Celebration activities for Italian-American families and the public sponsored in part by the Mayor’s Office, the Honorary Italian Vice Consul, Michael Homer, and the Italian-American Civic League will be held throughout the month of October. Public events include the screening of the documentary “Our Story: Italian-Americans in Utah,” Italian family history activities with Italian genealogists Ruth Lapioli and Paola Manfredi, and “All Things Italian,” a screening of travel films of Italy at the Unity Center.  A reception honoring Italian Ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata will be held for invited guests at the Utah State Capitol on October 26.

“Italian-Americans have made significant historic and cultural contributions for the enrichment of our state and especially for Salt Lake City,” said Mayor Becker. “The Italian people have been a great source for the diverse cultural community we now embrace and celebrate.”
