GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, As many of you are aware, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District has requested permission from the state to discharge contaminated ground water into Great Salt Lake. This discharge will be on the beach between the new Saltair and old Saltair sites. They have been building the pipe now for some time while they await approval. Approval is likely to happen in June. For those of you that come to the Great Salt Lake via SR201 and SR202 can see this pipe being built. What many of you may not know is that Kennecott has been discharging at the same location for several years. Representatives from Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District came out and visited with us at the marina today. It was very informative for us and for them. After our meeting this morning we requested JVWCD come out to the marina and present their proposed plans and how it may impact Great Salt Lake, the marina and the adjacent beaches, to the marina users or other interested parties. They have agreed to do this. We are still ironing out final details and times for this meeting but right now it looks like it will be Monday, May 23rd sometime in the late afternoon or evening. There will be presentations by the Marina, Division of Wildlife Services, Department of Water Quality, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District and Kennecott. The general outline of this presentation is as follows (still being finalized): . GSL Hydrology, Weather, Winds Currents (to better understand where this stuff may go) . GSL Wildlife Impact . GSL Water and Ecosystem Studies and Concerns . JVWCD Proposed Discharge . Kennecott's current discharge We (Parks) have not taken any position on this proposal. We still need to know more. And this presentation is a great opportunity to see what the impact will be. We have voiced our serious concerns about the potential impact on the marina and Great Salt Lake, whether it is direct pollution or visitation impact due to perceived pollution. We would like to invite the Marina community, the Brine Shrimp community and salvage company (Trestlewood) to this presentation. I have now done that with this email. But we would also like to invite the duck hunting community. If any of you have connections to that community please let me know some contacts so that they may be included. If you are interested in attending, please let me know. If we have enough interest I will make sure this meeting occurs. Thank you, for your attention.
