GSLYC Seminar - FOGSL - Wednesday February 3, 2016
For years, GSL Sailors & Rowers LOVED the fact that everyone regarded the GSL as a stinky old lake - that meant we had the lake to ourselves! No motorboats, no jet skis - nothing but nice quiet environment for sailing and rowing. However, keeping the lake a secret has not worked entirely in our favor. Last year when lobbying for the money to dredge our marina, I was shocked that no one (including Representatives and Senators) knew the importance of this lake. We live along the shores of something GREAT - Great Salt Lake. And whether we perceive it or not, during its relatively short life as a remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville, it has affected all of us. The Lake affect continues to modify, influence, and impress our lives and the lives of the millions migratory birds and animals that rely on it. As a terminal lake that lies at the bottom of a 35,000 square mile drainage basin that has a growing population upstream in its watershed, the Lake is a mirror of who we are and how we behave. Come participate in a discussion with FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake's Education Director about this valuable local resource and its unique ecosystem. We will be talking about the current Lake levels, projects we are involved in around the Lake, and how our organization educates thousands of people every year on Great Salt Lake. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE to come learn about this amazing lake - truly unique in the world - and it's ours! A lot of us love the lake because of the great sailing opportunities - but we need to expand our knowledge and learn to protect the lake we love! Feel free to bring a friend - let's help the general public get on board with appreciating what a great resource this is. *FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake was founded in 1994. The mission of FRIENDS is to preserve and protect the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the Lake through education, research, advocacy and the arts. The long-term vision of FRIENDS is to achieve comprehensive watershed-based restoration and protection for the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem.
