Shallow, Hazardous Marina Mouth Warning! GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users After some discussion and recent events in the Great Salt Lake State Marina mouth, we are no longer confident that ANY BOAT, regardless of draft, would be able to leave the GSL Marina mouth safely without damage. Even though we are reading 4.5 feet in the mouth, this is a nominal depth. That means it is 4.5 feet if you happen to pick the best route possible (missing rocks, sand bars and silting). Too many boats are becoming stuck in the mouth. This creates a hazard. The other night, after pulling a grounded boat from the mouth, "Rescue Four" (2 1/2 foot draft) hit a rock just outside the mouth (just left of center if you are leaving the marina). What this potentially means is that the rescue boats may not be able to safely maneuver around a boat stuck in the marina mouth. If you choose to utilize the marina mouth, please consider all the impacts. Can you make it through; If you become stuck will you be a hinderance to others; If you become stuck could you get off yourself. These are questions you must ask yourself and decide what the risks are. It is too bad the weather has brought us to this point but we are there. The recent storms have helped though. We have actually come up slightly in lake level. Even though we are not as low as we were three years ago we seem to have had sigificant silting in the area we dredged four years ago. This silting, although soft muck, is where boats are currently getting stuck. We have posted maps of the marina mouth on the Marina Office bulletin board. If you choose to utilize the mouth please consult these maps to pick your best route. Please be aware too, that we are doing everything we can at this time to see if we can get the mouth dredged out. We are also looking at possibly dredging the whole marina. The main office of Parks and Recreation are aware of our strongly expressed conserns. At this time we are working with the Army Corp of Engineers on the permit process. We are also looking for funding but budgets are tight. Maybe we will be able to utilize volunteer time and equipment. I will keep you posted on all developments.
