Jan 27 - FREE GSLYC Winter Seminar Series - Tom McLaughlin/North Sails
Wow! We just could not have asked for a better speaker than the one we have lined up to kick-off the GSLYC Winter Seminar Series. Tom McLauglin of North Sails (northsails.com) Wednesday, January 27, 2016 7:00 pm 400 W. Lawndale Drive (2500 So, enter from 300 West), SLC, UT 84115 FREE Admission (everyone welcome!) Tom McLaughlin began sailing after his family built a Blue Jay together and sailed it regularly on Mission Bay in their hometown of San Diego, CA. In 1968 Tom was hired by Lowell North (northsails.com) as a young dinghy sailor in San Diego. Currently focusing on Maxis and Superyachts, Tom has past experience in smaller One Design classes such as Snipes, Lightnings, Solings, and the OK Dinghy. A two-time college All-American, Tom won College Nationals with San Diego State University in 1968 and 1969. His sailing experience includes Admiral's Cups of the 70's & 80's, and an America's Cup effort in 1987 with the NYYC. Tom is also a two time Maxi World Champion. Though these are important accomplishments, Tom values the friendships he's made throughout his sailing career just as much. The sailing world has changed in the last 10 years, with a growth in Superyachts, consolidation in professional sailboat racers, middle class retreating to smaller boats, the decline of the "family sailing" in favor of individual activity. Tom will focus on these boats and their diversity. Tom will also talk about the current trends in sailing, moving from a trend of sailing bigger superyachts and Pro racing and retreating to one design and sailing alone. GSLYC Winter Seminar Series Every Wednesday evening between January 27 - March 30, 2016 7:00 pm to 8:30-9:00 ish The Safety Consortium Bldg., 400 W. Lawndale Drive (2500 So, enter from 300 West), SLC, UT (park in the east parking lot and enter thru the doors under the Training Room sign)
