GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users
Many of you will be watching weather forecasts today on TV. You will hear about very strong winds predicted for northern Utah. In response to many emails and phone texts I have recently received, I have decided to issue a general response and WIND forecast for the GREAT SALT LAKE MARINA area and for the GREAT SALT LAKE as a whole. I have been watching the charts closely and have come up with my best guess based on my many years battling wind storms here.
If you are thinking of sailing today . . . DON’T
If you are thinking of brine shrimping today . . . DON’T
If you are thinking of duck hunting by boat today . . . DON’T
If you are generally thinking of venturing out on the water today . . . DON’T
If you live on the east bench of the Wasatch Front near a canyon (especially Woods Cross and north) tie down your outside furniture, barbecue grill and dog!
But if you are worried about your boats at the Great Salt Lake Marina . . . (as long as you have checked and replaced your dock lines recently), do not stress too much about your boats. We are expecting LARGE seas here. We are expecting gusty winds. We have issued a Gale Force Warning (winds 20 to 35pmh). But we rarely see damaging strong winds from the east at the Great Salt Lake Marina. (Understand YOU are still responsible for your boat).
This strong front, forecasted for northern Utah, is predicted to pass across the north half of Great Salt Lake, then dive south to the east of the Wasatch Front, causing very strong easterly canyon winds. These winds, if they follow their general pattern, will diminish dramatically in strength, by the time they get to the Great Salt Lake Marina.
Antelope Island Marina and Promontory Marina should be on high alert though.
If you have your boat at Antelope Island Marina . . . Secure it well! You will see very strong gusts up that way.
GALE FORCE WARNING for Wednesday and Thursday for the Great Salt Lake Marina and the Great Salt Lake. Strong gusty northerly winds 20 to 45mph possible.
