Great Salt Lake, America's Inland Sea, is the largest body of water in the United States outside the Great Lakes. And it is so large it can affect weather patterns enhancing their strength. Great Salt Lake can produce strong "Lake Effect" storms as well as impact monsoonal thunderstorms. Because of the salinity of the water and the size of the lakes waves on Great Salt Lake can reach 10 feet high and have a force substantially more than an equivalent wave on the ocean. And Great Salt Lake also has currents and ice bergs. Learn how to predict weather on Great Salt Lake. Learn why Great Salt Lake has an awesome onshore breeze mid-day during the summer. This presentation is important to Sailors, rowers, swimmers,... paddle boarders but is especially important to GSL duck hunters - who often don't understand the differences between a regular lake and the Great Salt Lake. What could be a minor incident on a fresh water lake can swamp a duck boat quickly on the Great Salt Lake. Presented by the Harbormaster of the GSL Marina, Dave Shearer. Not only is Dave Shearer our Harbormaster, but he has spent the majority of his life on the Great Salt Lake, he is also our "rescuer", and in charge of the Volunteer Emergency Response Team. He is the one who ultimately ends up getting us out of trouble (so he would love it if we all learned to read the weather patterns better :o) Wednesday February 10, 2016 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm (ish) The Safety Consortium 400 W.
