New sighting

Well, the new security cameras are definitely entertaining. We had another sighting last night of a feral cat, skunk, . . . and the mountain lion again.

Forgot to mention

I forgot to mention, in my previous email, one benefit of having the security cameras is we have picked up video of quite a few critters walking around at night. A small list of these are rabbits, feral cats, skunks, porcupines, foxes and such. One big surprise last Saturday night was a medium size mountain lion. I was quite surprised to see one in the marina parking lot but the video is very clear that it is a mountain lion. These should pose no threat to the average person as these animals are very skittish of humans just as foxes are but you might want to keep close track to your little kids and any pets late at night. Some issues

We have been having some issues with someone unlocking the front gate after hours and keeping the gate open. For this reason we have had to put a different padlock on the front gate. Your electronic gate code still works so you should be able to get in afterhours still. We have also added security cameras to the park so we can see afterhours traffic. This will hopefully improve security after the park closes. Starting October, the gate starts closing at 5pm as we go to standard park winter hours. If you have guests coming into the park afterhours DO NOT GIVE THEM THE GATE CODE. Please meet them at the gate and let them in. On a good note, it looks like the lake has slowed down greatly or even stopped dropping already. This is a little earlier than normal. Pray for snow! Dave

STRONG WINDS PREDICTED - GSL Marina

Next Friday, the weather models are holding consistent that we can have a very significant wind event at the Great Salt Lake. This is typical for this time of year and is another great reminder to prepare your boats for the Fall Frontal Season. Please check your dock lines. Replace them if necessary. Check your boat, your sails, and any other property you may own at the Great Salt Lake Marina. It looks like it is going to be a very active and windy Fall. Thanks Dave

High Winds

Clarification When I referred to the East Bench, I was referring to the Wasatch Front; not anywhere near the marina. Again we have not observed ANY damage at the marina. The winds just didn't get that strong here. Dave

High Winds

I've had a few calls this morning from people concerned about the high winds and what it may have done to the marina. We usually never get very strong winds from the North or East. And this is the case today. The strongest winds we have had was 52mph. We haven't walked the docks yet but everything is fine here. I know some slip renters along the east bench have damage though. And that is sorry to hear. We will walk the docks later this afternoon but do not expect much damage though. Dave

Wind Warning

The wind models are holding together indicating that it looks like we are in for some strong winds Tuesday. September begins Frontal Weather Season, which can mean strong pre-frontal and post-frontal winds. It is time to secure your property at the marina for the fall. Please do the following: * Check/replace dock lines. Dock lines are only good for about two years at Great Salt Lake. You won't even see them rotting out before they break because they rot from the inside out. * Secure your sails. Make sure they are off the boat or are furled tightly with a halyard or line wrapped around them to secure them from unfurling. An unfurled sail can lead to shredding, dismasting, property damage or even injury. * Secure all loose objects on your boat. Do not leave something on-deck or on the dock that could become a dangerous projectile. * Clean your scuppers. Make sure they are clear of sand buildup or other debris so water can properly drain from your cockpit instead of into the cabin. Also, we have had to cut several hoses from the hose bibs on the pedestals. These hoses used aluminum connectors which fuse to the hose bibs destroying them. We have had to replace over 40 hose bibs this season with 27 of those just being in August alone. Do not use hoses with aluminum connectors. Fall is a good time to go sailing. I know some boats are trapped in the marina but the soundings we took this week look promising for most boats to still get out during the cooler fall temperatures. Thanks Dave
