A bit of good news

Well, it's not official, but it looks like the lake stopped dropping much earlier than usual this year. The lake has stayed stable at 4192.2'msl since early October. I am seeing 4.4' at the mouth as long as you hit it just right. Now we just need winter to kick in as soon as possible so we may have a healthy lake level next year. Dave

I honestly don't know where the time goes, but it goes! It's the end of October already and time for our annual Halloween social :o) Pumpkin Patch October 27, 2018 5:00 pm - Dinner at the Yacht Club Pavilion The Yacht Club will provide the main dish of Sloppy Joe's - please bring a side dish or dessert to share, bring your own beverage. Harbormaster's Annual Turkey Social

It is nearing time for the Harbormaster's Annual Turkey Social! This is a great event open to the whole marina community. Every year, on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, I deep fry several turkeys. If you have never had deep fried turkey you are really missing out! This event started 25 years ago with a handful of people and one turkey. It has now grown into one of the largest events of the year and last year we served up eight turkeys. I will supply the turkeys but side dishes are definitely welcome. This is some of the best food of the year so don't miss out. I will serve turkey promptly at 4pm. THIS IS AN RSVP event so I know how many turkeys to buy. RSVP's are now being accepted. Hope to see you there. And don't forget about the Pumpkin Patch Halloween party this Saturday. Thanks Dave

Water to the docks

Water to the docks will be turned off this month. We have currently scheduled that for the last weekend this month. So come out now and clean off your boats. And then PLEASE collect your hoses and take them home for the winter so they do not become tripping hazards in the snow. The pump-a-head will also be winterized at the same time. So if you have holding tanks to pump out, do that now. Thanks Dave

Fall/Winter weather and your boats

For those that don't check up on www.gslmarina.com<http://www.gslmarina.com> and go to the Current Water Watch report tab, here is where we stand today: Snowpack for the Great Salt Lake Drainage area = 383% Precipitation for the Water Year (starts October 1) so far is 523% to-date. We have received 2.46" of rain for October so far. The normal precipitation for October is 1.57". So we have 157% precipitation for October. And the lake level looks like it may have stopped dropping. Currents appear to be flowing again. This is all very good news. But do not get too excited yet. This is only the beginning of the water year. Is this the beginning of a trend? Or is this just a blip in a dry trend like April was. It is too early to tell. The weather pattern we just experienced is not the weather pattern that NOAA is predicting for this fall. But it is similar to what The Farmer's Almanac predicted. So to the point now. We have had a lot of rain. We are also going into our windy season. It is time to prepare your boats for wind and precip. Check or even replace your dock lines. Secure sails . . . especially furling genoas. Secure your property for the upcoming season. And prey for LOTS of snow. Thanks Dave

Upcoming Events

Fall is here. But that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do at the lake. Here are a few upcoming events at the Great Salt Lake. October 13, GSL State Park hosts Kite Flying event. Be here at 1pm. Great family friendly event. If the wind is good enough and the draft of your boat is shallow enough you can fly your kite from your boat on the water. October 23, GSL State Park hosts Full Moon Walk. This is a 6:30 guided tour event. Great for the whole family. October 27, Great Salt Lake Yacht Club hosts Pumpkin Patch. This is a family friendly event that includes dinner at 5pm. 6pm is the costume parade and contest. Awards for scariest, funniest, most creative. 6:45pm is trick or treating for the kids. People return to their boats and the kids come by for trick or treating. This is a great family event open to the whole community. The club does charge a $5.00 fee for non-members though. November 17, the 23rd Annual Dave's Turkey Social. Have you ever had Deep Fried Turkey? It is the best. This has become the largest event at the marina and is a great family friendly event. Last year we served 8 turkeys and nothing was left over. I provide the turkeys but do request side dishes. Some of the best food of the year. Turkey is served promptly at 4pm. The event is open to the whole community at no cost. But this is an RSVP event so I know how many turkeys to prepare. December 23, Bottom-of-the-Pit Party. This is a chili cookoff social open to the whole community. It is the longest running traditional event at Great Salt Lake Marina starting back in the 1970's. Bring your favorite chili recipe. Contest and awards for most original recipe, spiciest, and best tasting. This event starts at 11am and lasts until the chili is gone. January 1, First Sail (and we should have enough water by then to get out and enjoy a brisk and invigorating day on the lake. More information to follow.
