Lake Level and the Marina Future

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. I know many of you are beginning to feel anxious about the lake level and the snowpack (or lack thereof). I know I certainly am. Many of you are wondering whether you will need to pull out this spring before you become trapped in the marina. I have been grinding the numbers and they do not look promising. But before I release predictions based on what the lake level is now and where we are looking for a snowpack I want to work the numbers over hard. I hope to send all of you an email within the next few days with hard facts and solid predictions so that you can all plan accordingly. DREDGING - Reminder for Appropriations Tomorrow

Just a reminder that the Appropriations Committee meets again to vote on the budgets that were presented last week on February 6. The GSL Community is asking that the Committee not approve the 1.5 million for Utah Lake dredging, but instead recommend that the 1.5 million get spent on GSL dredging. It is important to realize that his committee does not have the final say. Utah State Parks & Recreation (Fred Hayes) and Utah Dept. Natural Resources (Mike Styles) are the 2 entities that have the final say as to which marina gets dredged. SO even if we don't achieve our objective tomorrow in appropriations committee - the FIGHT IS NOT OVER. We still need everyone to continue contacting the Governor, Div Natural Resources and especially State Parks. I have made a few attempts to get a meeting with the Governor and Mike Hayes at State Parks, but so far have had no luck. However, I am extremely busy this time of year - so if there is someone else who has some extra time and want to take on the task of trying to set up these meetings I would greatly appreciate it. I doubt that tomorrow the public will get much of a chance to talk - BUT IT IS IMPORTANT - that you try to get these Committee Members before the meeting and introduce yourself and where you are from. They need to know who is there. In my contact with them, both Rep. McKell and Rep. Christofferson have shown particular interest in this subject, so again, please try to introduce yourself. Also try to track down Brian Cottam, Director of Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands - introduce yourself and share your concerns about the decision that State Parks has made to dredge Utah Lake instead of the GSL. PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY for the Capitol. The meeting starts at 8:00 am in the Senate Building which is the building to the east of the Capitol Building (the bldg with the Rotunda). There are parking lots on the east side of the Capitol - if you get there about 7:30, you should not have a problem finding a place to park. If you get there after 8:00 am you will have problems finding parking. I am working out of town and cannot be there tomorrow - but I will be there in spirit. I sincerely wish we could get all 100 people that showed up to the dredging meeting at the marina to go to this tomorrow morning - but we will be extremely grateful for anyone who can attend. ACTION ALERT - DREDGING - Keep the pressure on

?I wanted to give everyone a report on what happened Friday at the Appropriations Committee Meeting. ?In the appropriations Committee Meeting on Friday Feb. 6, 2015, Brian Cottam, Director for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, and did a very good job of glossing over the details. He presented a slide that said: Sovereign Lands FY16 Building Blocks Utah Lake * Utah Lake State Park Marina Dredging $1,500,000 one time * Utah Lake Public Access $125,000 one time And then Mr. Cottam, said "We have within the Governor's budget $1.5 million dollars for marina dredging. We have been having extensive conversation with State Parks, there's 3 marinas that could use dredging, Antelope Island being the third which we are not considering right now, so it's the Great Salt Lake Marina and Utah Lake State Park. From conversations with State Parks what we would recommend is to prioritize Utah Lake this year, with an understanding that we would come back next year most likely to make a request for Great Salt Lake Marina. If you would like more specific information there are folks from State Parks here that can speak to the dredging and the cost. From a Sovereign Lands perspective though, we believe this is a good use of the restricted account because going back to the public trusts, navigation, recreation, public safety, making sure our search and rescue vehicles and boats can get out of marinas that's the public trust doctrine interest that we have, but we absolutely support State Parks interests in getting these marinas dredged and continuing to be useful as well." (Emphasis added) It is URGENT that we keep the pressure on. From what we saw on Friday it appears that the final decision lays in the hands of State Parks and is being supported by Mr. Cottam of the Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands. However we still need to keep the pressure on the Appropriations Committee as well. WE NEED TO BE VERY VISIBLE. TOMORROW - Dredging Appropriations Committee Meets at 8 am

Just a reminder that the appropriations committee meets tomorrow morning at 8:00 am. If anyone can be there to show their support for the appropriation of funds to dredge the GSL Marina it would be extremely helpful. Only a handful of people will get the opportunity to speak about the subject to the appropriations committee - but there is POWER IN NUMBERS - the committee will definitely look at the number of people who are there to support dredging the GSL Marina. PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND - I have attached the notice. Please dress appropriately for the State Capitol.
