MARINA MOUTH UPDATE

GSL Slip Renters. Here is an update on our efforts today to clean the mouth of the marina out. The LUCIN came down bright and early this morning. For those of you that have not seen the tug LUCIN it is a 1950's era tug brought in by Trestlewood to help them pull out the old trestle. She is a 55 foot long diesel burning tug and she was quite the site as she motored from Promontory Marina down the lake. In fact, that old diesel engine was burning enough black smoke that drivers along I-80 were calling dispatch and reporting a boat on fire on the lake. I had to field some frantic calls from dispatch telling them things were just fine. The LUCIN arrived around 9:30am and went right to work. She draws six feet and has a 54" prop. The LUCIN grounded right away just coming into the mouth of the marina. When she left she was no longer touching bottom. I want to express a word of caution here. The LUCIN really went to town. We know material was dislodged from the side break wall and shifted into the mouth itself. This was early on in the process. This material was likely blown out of the mouth later in the process. The mouth and part of the marina is now the consistency and color of chocolate milk. Some of this sediment will fall back down and into the mouth. Our depth sounders will be useless until at least tomorrow and more likely Wednesday due to all the suspended sediment. And the mouth has an interesting aroma. But there is also some good news we know of; The current and wind were just strong enough and from the right direction today that most of the suspended sediment and aroma drifted west of the marina. The LUCIN team used a probe to sound the mouth. And I am very cautious here but the results (SO FAR) seem to be more than we could have hoped for. Remember I earlier stated that the LUCIN draws six feet and ran aground coming into the marina mouth. As they were probing they were coming up with depths of 8.5 feet to 9.5 feet after their efforts. If this holds to be the case we should be back where we were four years ago when we last dredged where the mouth is, once again, two or more feet deeper than the marina itself. We also ran the tug down the main channel of the marina and between 'J' and 'K' dock to push down the hump between the two docks. The marina mouth is now open. But please use extreme caution for awhile until we can thoroughly sound the mouth and can determine if we have any unexpected humps. Eardley Spit Cruise Day

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. I've been kicking some ideas around recently while thinking about how low the lake levels may be this fall. One of the ideas that keeps coming back to me is to host an Eardley Spit Cruise Day while most boats can still get out. So here is the Idea. On either Saturday, June 22nd or Saturday July 6th, I would like to host an Eardley Spit Cruise Day. This would be similar to the Road Trip series I did in past years. This would be an opportunity for the marina community and our/your guests to see a part of the lake that you may not normally get to see; to explore new anchorages. This would be an organized cruise/sail out to Eardley Spit for a mid-day picnic (potluck) as well as volleyball and bocce ball on the spit. Go explore the spit and many of its wonders and wash ashore mysteries. This event would be a marina wide event hosted by the Harbor Master and would be open to all regardless of club affiliation or craft (bring your day sailors, boats, kayaks, Hawaiian canoe's, motorboats, whatever safely floats on the Great Salt Lake). For those that may not have a way to get to shore from their boats I will bring a runabout to shuttle people. I'm sure others, who have runabouts would also be willing to help. This would mainly be a day cruise. But for those that want to stay overnight, Eardley Spit usually makes a good, protected anchorage. Please give me your feedback so I can decide whether we want to hold this event or some activities that would be nice to do. If this is a success we may plan another cruise to another Great Salt Lake destination. BOAT REGISTRATIONS!

GSL Slip Renters, Yesterday I was walking the docks in preparation for linseeding them next week. I noticed several boats that were not currently registered or were registered in another state. ULTIMATE 20 FLEET! Several of you need to get your boats registered in the state of Utah as well as get your stickers on your boats! And there are several other boats on each dock that do not have current year stickers on their boats or still have bow numbers from other states. I saw a couple boats with 2010 stickers. If you have a sticker that is older than 2013 I'm guessing you will be getting your second or third citation in as many years. I have it on good authority that the rangers will be coming out this week or next and walking the docks looking for registration compliance. They WILL be giving citations. I don't want to see people getting citations for registration issues or "Failure to Display". Remember, it is not enough to register your boat. It must also have the stickers on. I am not law enforcement. I cannot do anything to postpone a citation. So please do not call me or email me with a reason why your boat is not registered or how your stickers are at home on your desk. I cannot do anything for you. PLEASE just get them registered right away and get the stickers on the boat. FOR THOSE BOATS WITH STICKERS THAT ARE A YEAR OR MORE OLDER, I'm guessing that it is likely those boats will be seized and taken to 'L' dock within the next few weeks. Sorry. ALSO, As I mentioned above, we will begin linseeding the docks next week. This is one of our annual maintenance items. To make this easier, if you could please remove all personal items from your docks (this does not include power cords, hoses or dock boxes). Please, if you could temporarily removed dinghies, spars, dock carts and other items so that we can make the linseed project go much quicker and safer. And one last reminder that the marina mouth will be closed tomorrow so that the tugboat LUCIN can do some work in the mouth. Thank you.
