FYI from Bonneville School of Sailing . . . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE WINTER SAILING SEMINARS Sailing Distant Oceans - Long Beach to Catalina Island & Blue-Water Techno Gadgets Come with us to Catalina Island as we revisit our inaugural Catalina Island Adventure Cruise of April 2011. The magic of Catalina was all around us as we walked the street fairs in Avalon, watched paragliders out on the ocean, learned all about "big boat" systems before we headed around the island for some exciting swells and dolphin sightings. Morning sunrise in Two Harbors was increadible as schools of sardines roughed the calm waters and seals and pelicans completed the cycle. Roger Bliss, our Catalina Captain will share some of the techno gadgets he uses when sailing blue-water (ipad, smartphone apps, electronic chart programs, etc.). This will be a great seminar to check out if you would like to join us for our next Catalina Cruise this spring. The seminars will be held at the Utah Lake State Park Visitor's Center. Fellow Boaters and GSL Aficionados, There will NOT be a Great Salt Lake Yacht Club seminar this Wednesday, February 29 (aka, Leap Day). The seminars will resume on March 7 with Dave Shearer, GSL Marina and Antelope Island Marina Harbor Master, discussing boating and boating safety at the Great Salt Lake. The following weeks will have Bryant Pratt presenting Quick & Dirty Navigation on the Great Salt Lake (Mar. 14), then The Salt Sisters present their adventures in, on and around the Great Salt Lake (Mar. 21). There may be a bonus seminar on Mar. 28 -- stay tuned! The sessions are being held in the Safety Consortium training room, located at 400 W Lawndale Dr. (2500 S) in South Salt Lake. To get to the Safety Consortium building, go to 300 West at 21st. or 27th. South, then go south or north to Lawndale Dr. (2500 S, just south of the I-80 overpass), turn west and drive to 400 W Lawndale Dr. on right side of the road (Lawndale curves to the south). Rolling mast cradle

GSL Slip Renters Thanks to a very generous donation by Bob Smith the marina now has a portable mast cradle system available for use. No more need to find five good friends to lug your mast around the parking lot on crane days (or other days). Two people can easily cart a mast around now. The cradles are stored at the marina office (Building C) and are available for use free by appointment. Please email the harbor master a few days ahead in order to arrange for their use. Lake Level

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, Good news! Today the stable lake level surpassed the HIGHEST lake level of last year. Last year we topped out at 4198.5 in July. Today we are at 4198.6 and still going! We will be pulling out all the Deep Channel buoys in the next few weeks and putting back in the rest of the Reef Channel (short cut) buoys. There really is no reason to have the Deep Channel buoys in the water until next fall. They are expensive and difficult to maintain. Also, the currents are already beginning to run fairly strong. Pay attention to the currents as you use the Reef Channel so that you do not drift into a buoy rode or into the breakwater corner. The currents are likely to stay strong through June this year. FYI . . . Please make your concern known to the FCC regarding potential GPS interference by LightSquared's proposed cellular broadband service. The battle is not over! Bryant Pratt February 24, 2012 Dear BoatU.S. Member: Last summer boaters sent a clear message to the Federal Communications Commission - "Don't Mess with GPS!" As you may remember, a private company, LightSquared, received preliminary FCC approval to offer a new cellular broadband service. Tests showed this service could significantly interfere with GPS signals. Thanks to over 18,000 boaters who submitted comments, along with many other GPS users, the FCC required additional testing in the fall. (Thank you all for your help!) Last week, these tests revealed that the LightSquared's network would interfere with GPS and that there are no practical fixes. As a result, the FCC has proposed to withdraw LightSquared's approval.(http://www.gps.gov/news/2012/02/lightsquared/) The FCC has a new comment period (open to March 1) asking for the public's opinion. Even if you wrote last summer, please take a few minutes now and write the FCC asking them to protect the GPS signal by saying "No" to LightSquared's current proposal. Given this company's tenacity over the last year, we want to make sure that boaters' needs are remembered as the FCC makes their final decision. Important points to make: a.. How do you use GPS in your life - on the water, on land, or in the air? b.. What would happen to your business/personal life if GPS became unavailable or unreliable? c.. Wireless broadband service is important, but it should not come at the expense of GPS. d.. All the studies show that LightSquared's proposed network would cause interference and that there are no remedies. e.. Tell FCC that you rely on them to protect the integrity of the GPS signal and that you support their recommendation to stop LightSquared's current proposal You can submit comments directly to the FCC through their online comment form. (We regret we can't streamline this process for you, but it is important enough we're still asking for your help.) Here's how: 1.. Click on this link for the FCC's Electronic Comments Filing System (ECFS): http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/hotdocket/list 2.. Select "Proceeding Number 11-109." It should be near the top of the list. 3.. In the designated boxes, enter your name and mailing address. 4.. In the box that says "Type in or paste your brief comments," do so. Click "Continue". 5.. A review page will load listing all of the information entered. If correct, click "Confirm." 6..
