GSL SLIP RENTERS TIME TO RENEW YOUR SLIP and DRY STORAGE CONTRACTS Greetings from the staff of the Great Salt Lake State Marina. What a year! After ten years of challenging lake levels we have finally recovered in just one winter. And the forecast for the 2012 season looks like another plentiful supply of water. It is that time of year again to renew slip / dry storage contracts and credit card autopay forms. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT BY LAW ALL CONTRACTS AND AUTOPAY FORMS TERMINATE ON DECEMBER 31st. WE MUST HAVE NEW CONTRACT's EACH CALENDAR YEAR. State Parks budget has been hit hard this year. This includes the Great Salt Lake State Marina's budget. In order to keep as much money in our budget as possible for infrastructure repair and improvement we are trying something new this year in regards to slip contract renewals. To save money on postage we would request that you renew your contracts by going online, printing off the required forms and then either sending, emailing or faxing the forms back to the marina. The new system will also allow us to serve you better. Within the next week or two (there are a lot of you so it will take a while to get through the whole list) you will each receive an individual email with your specific information. This should hopefully aide you in filling out your contracts. The information will include: . Slip number (if applicable) . Dry Storage Number (if applicable) . Bow Number (if already on file - if not you WILL NEED TO SUPPLY IT) . Hull ID Number (if already on file - if not you WILL NEED TO SUPPLY IT) . Boat Manufacturer / Mode / Boat Name . Current balance on account (statements available upon request) . Slip Rates Hopefully this will make it much easier to fill out your contracts. If you prefer we send a contract package to you via USPS instead of going online we will do so. Just follow the instructions below for that request. Now is your chance to tell us how you would like to renew your contract. Please cut and paste one of the following requests on an email to me. I will then send you an individual email with renewal information including the above information or I will send you a contract package via USPS based on your response. . "Yes, I would like online/email information to renew my contract." . "No, please send me a contract package via USPS." We have plenty of good sailing weather still ahead of us. Very few of us were able to even get our boats out of the marina at this time last year. Crane Day - Mast Drop Party

GSL Slip Renters, Looks like we have a fairly good list for the upcoming crane day. If you are pulling out but haven't RSVP'd yet, please do so. I need to know how long to rent the crane for and what size crane to bring in. Also, this Sunday is the Mast Dropping party. I haven't had any RSVP's for that. Red Dye in lake

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. I have now heard back from USGS and have more information on the red dye that will be discharged into the lake. I know some of you have expressed concern whether the dye will stain boats. So here is the updated information. The dye will be released near the shore line where Lee Creek drains into the lake. For those that may not know where Lee Creek is, it is the creek just barely east (bordering) the old Saltair site. If your vessel came in direct contact with the dye right near the discharge it could stain the boat. But this is unlikely to happen since you will not be able to get your boat near Lee Creek due to the Goggins Reef. By the time the dye makes it past the reef the dilution will be such that there will be no risk of staining to the boats. Even if the dye were to make it into the marina itself, it would be so diluted that there will be no risk of staining. So the risk of staining to boats that may sail through a dye plume is minimal. On the other hand, if any of you know how to warn the duck hunters of the dye discharge please let me know. If one of these boaters motors directly into the plume right at Lee Creek there is a risk of staining to their boats. Those hunting at North Canal or Goggins should have no issues. The discharge is scheduled in the window of October 30th to November 4th depending on weather. USGS will let me know of the exact date before the discharge. Hope that helps Harbor Master

USGS Dye Discharge into GSL

USGS wanted me to forward on the following press release regarding a red dye discharge into the Great Salt Lake to better understand potential dispersal flows from Kennecott and JVWCD. News Release October 18, 2011 David Naftz 801-908-5053 dlnaftz(a)usgs.gov Pollutant Mixing in Great Salt Lake To Be Studied by Injection of Red Dye Weather permitting, U.S. Geological Survey scientists in cooperation with Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, will inject a bright red fluorescent dye into the south end of Great Salt Lake (in the vicinity of the Lee Creek outflow) sometime between Monday, October 31 and Thursday, November 4, 2011. The dye study is aimed at obtaining useful information on the dispersion, direction of movement, and travel times of potential contaminants entering the south shore area of Great Salt Lake. The south shore of the lake receives inflow from various surface water sources, some containing pollutants from sources in the Salt Lake valley. The results of the study will provide information that can be used by Federal, state, and local agencies, particularly with respect to tracking current and future inputs of pollutants (including selenium) into the south part of Great Salt Lake. The red dye-known as Rhodamine WT-will be injected into Lee Creek prior to its entry into Great Salt Lake and may be visible up to a mile offshore once the dye enters Great Salt Lake. The dye, which has been used in hydrologic studies for decades, has been approved for use as a water tracer by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is safe to aquatic life at the concentrations used in this study. The dye concentration will be measured during the study using a combination of fixed and boat mounted monitoring stations, as well as an automated underwater vehicle. Weather permitting, the dye solution will be slowly and steadily injected into Lee Creek for at least four hours. Fluorometric measurements will be made starting near the injection point and continuing offshore for distances of up to 1 mile. Parking lot striping - Another change

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, Ok, here is the most recent information from the striping contractor. They will be here Saturday (tomorrow) to sweep the parking lot. We will then close off most of the parking lot on Sunday night so that striping can begin Monday morning. I will update you as soon as I hear their next change in plans Harbormaster

Striping, Water Shutoff & Pumpkin Patch

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, The parking lot striping has been postponed till Tuesday. Current forecasts show a hard freeze coming October 23rd. This means the water may be turned off for the season by October 22nd. I will keep you posted but please plan accordingly. The GSLYC Race Chair has asked me to pass on the following information regarding the upcoming Pumpkin Patch: Hi Everyone, The 2011 Pumpkin Patch Race will be held on Saturday, the 22nd of October. Skippers meeting at 1200hrs and a race start of 1300hrs. There will be a time deduction for any crew that are ALL in costumes - (awards for best crew) There will also be a time deduction for any boat that finishes Stern first (CAUTION: Any boat attempting this awesome feat will not have right of way) just bragging rights! This will give everyone time to finish the race and go up for lunch at the Halloween party at 4:30pm. Parking Lot Striping

Please park in the north lot if you are visiting the marina tomorrow morning. We will likely close the north parking lot in the afternoon. You will still have access to your boats. Marina News, Mast Drop Party

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. It is now fall and time for some updates and changes. MAST DROP PARTY Are you planning on pulling your boat on Crane Day? I know I am. I have organized a Mast Drop Party for Sunday, October 23rd at 11am. Let's all help each other drop our masts in preparation for Crane Day. I will have a crock pot of Chili. Other side dishes are welcome. Please RSVP so I know how much Chili to bring. CRANE DAY Crane day is Friday, November 4th at 9am SHARP. Crane spots are being handled BY RESERVATION ONLY. First Come, First Served. Please rsvp to dshearer(a)gslmarina.com as soon as possible so I know what size crane to bring in. I will bring in the smallest, most economical crane we can get by with. As far as I've heard this is the only crane day for this fall. The next known crane day will be mid March. PUMPKIN PATCH SOCIAL and REGATTA The GSLYC annual Pumpkin Patch Social and Regatta is Saturday October 22nd. Rumor has it there will be kids activities, an evening social and trick-or-treating on the docks for the kids. And rumor also has it that with the water up we will be able to return to the old regatta format on the water with bonuses for costumes, etc. Stay tuned to www.gslyc.org for more information. PULLING THE RACE BUOYS On Saturday, October 15th we will be pulling the buoys for the year. The yacht club needs some volunteers to help with the task. The fringe benefit of helping is a ride on Rescue One (I know, it's not that exciting). I will also be sending an email out shortly that goes into specifics of the renewal Process. REMEMBER that ALL Slip Rent Contracts and ALL Credit Card Autopay forms EXPIRE December 31st. Storm Report

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users, This storm was a BIG one as far as water! Unofficially, the marina has received 1.78' of water so far in October. And its only the sixth of the month. Normal precipitation for the whole of October is 1.57" That gets us to a normal precipitation level of November 4th! Is this the beginning of another very wet winter? I think so As far as wind damage, there is none. Even though the east and west shores of the lake were seeing strong winds, the strongest gust we saw at the marina was 51mph. Yawn. Harbormaster
