GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. A while ago I sent out an email about a trend chance in our weather. Well, it still seems to be true. Although October started out dry, we have had a whopper of a finish to the month. And, since April 1st, we have only had two months that were below normal precipitation. The rest have been well above. October will end up at a minimum of 115% of normal And the snowpack, as of today, for the Great Salt Lake Drainage is 170% The critical and very dry (for the last ten years) Bear River Drainage is over 180% as of today. Last year, from October through March, we had only 61% of normal precipitation. WARNNG! DEEP CHANNEL BUOYS

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users Last night's storm brought significant wind and especially waves to the Great Salt Lake. The waves have taken a toll on the Deep Channel Buoys. Three were taken out. And two more have shifted significantly. The buoys that are now missing are G1, G7 and R12 (the buoy at the mouth of the marina) The Buoys that are known to have shifted are R6 and G11 (the green buoy at the mouth of the marina). With the forecast for storms over the next few days, it will take us the better portion of this week to retrieve and reset these buoys. Use the deep channel AT YOUR OWN RISK. It can still be navigated but attentiveness and caution should be practiced to their full effect. Rest assured, that when conditions allow for it, we will get these buoys back in place. I have heard from the Trestlewood people today. The waves were so significant at the Promontory marina that it sunk their 165' barge (the barge that did our dredging two years ago). They were able to pump it out and refloat it today. The effect of the storm on this marina was mostly due to waves. We can only find one boat that was damaged due to wind. It is in J-23 and is a Santana 23. All other boats seem to be fine. But we also lost power for most of last night and a good portion of today. If you have electrical systems on your boat you may want to check them out. Of course I'm sure there are no unattended heaters on any of these boats. Water being shut off

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. We have a cold spell on the way next week. Temperatures are forecasted to drop well below freezing at night. We had scheduled to turn the water off on Monday of next week. And that is exactly what will happen. This will be your last weekend for water on the docks. But we are going to try something different this year as far as the pump-a-head dock. We are going to try and leave it available all winter this winter. It will not be available all the time. We will make it available during the weekends only. And on another note; We need to get the docks ready for winter. This means we need you to collect ALL of your items off the dock. Hoses should be removed, spray bottles, fuel cans (that should not be on the dock anyway), umbrella stands, etc. Please remove it all so that we can safely remove snow this winter. Items that are left on the dock past November 5th may be removed by our staff. And it is now time to remove the dinghies and kayaks from the docks too. If your dinghy or kayak can fit in the water in your slip that is fine. Otherwise it must be removed from the slips after this weekend. On the News tab of the site there are links to several news stories over the last few days about the Low Lake Levels and the troubles with boats at the marina. Storm Surge Warning

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. The lake is now at its lowest level since 1963. We predicted this would happen. But it has been shocking to see the effect of "Negative Storm Surge" over the last three days. We are currently bouncing between a lake level of 4193.7 to 4193.8. But, on Monday, and on Wednesday, we had storms come through that dropped the water level on the south half of the lake by 8/10ths of a foot. At that level the bottom of the marina broke the surface between the marina patio and 'E' dock. And the bottom of the marina appeared along the north break wall behind 'B' dock. The mouth of the marina became very narrow and the level at the mouth was about 3.5' clearance (draft). That means that nearly every boat was trapped in the marina (or out of the marina if you had gone sailing before the negative storm surge). And the scary thing about Wednesday's drop is that the wind never got strong here at the marina. But Hat Island had significant wind that dragged the water north. For this reason, we have added another element to the daily forecasts posted on the bulletin board and on www.gslmarina.com We have now issued "Negative Storm Surge Warnings" if we feel there is enough of a chance of south winds to drop the level at the mouth of the marina. I would hate to have someone go sailing in the morning only to be trapped on the lake because the lake water went north closing the mouth of the marina. But realize we may not be able to predict every significant south wind. Another interesting thing is that the reef just north of the marina broke the surface of the water during these negative storm surges as did the Goggins Reef. (and I mean "interesting" in a bad way) On a good note, the lake appears to be trying to stabilize for the year. We should be near the bottom and should start climbing sometime in November. And the prediction is for a wetter than normal weather cycle for the Bear River Drainage to kick in sometime late October or November. Because of the storm activity predicted today we have issued a NEGATIVE STORM SURGE WARNING for the Great Salt Lake Marina for the rest of today.
