Glittering Stone books back in print NOW
check out Tor-forge.com, Bleak Seasons, She is the Darkness, and Soldiers Live are all available again, and at their original cover prices of $5.99 and 6.99. Water Sleeps never went out of print, and it is now avilable for $7.99 instead of its original (and up to recently) price of $6.99. So, those looking to read the last 4 black Company books don't have to wait for the last two omnibuses to come out in Sptember and January. Nor do they have to pay a fortune on the secondary market. What's this about? I haven't a clue. I did check another favorite Tor/Forge author of mine, Richard S. Wheeler. The site shows some of Wheeler's extensive back catalog back in print. I'm guessing Tor cleaned out a warehouse somewhere and found some leftover boxes of books, but that's only a guess. Regardless, if you aren't set for these books, have at it!
If the cover price changed then I'd guess there was a new printing. Maybe they are flogging these books as oppose to investing in new authors? In any case, it's good to hear that the books are in print - I think Cook makes more off selling each book separately than when they are in an omnibus. Richard
Only Water Sleeps has a new price. With further thought, my latest guess is that Tor is doing Print On Demand copies of the other three. I took a course this summer on the Publishing Industry, and learned a bit about the latest POD technology. There now exist machines that can print from a computer file mass market paperbacks that are about 80-90% as good in quality as conventional printing presses. In the past few years Tor did POD editions of the early Barnaby Skye novels of Wheeler, whom I mentioned earlier. Those never made it to bookstores, but were only sold online by Tor themselves and Amazon/B&N. So I won't be surprised if these Black Company reprints never turn up in brick & mortar stores, while the omnibuses DO end up in stores. As an update to the above, I saw the new edition of Water Sleeps this weekend. It has a new back cover design, and the whole book feels different, in production terms. I suspect it was indeed a high quality POD book. I saw it at a small independent bookstore in Fort Collins, Colorado. I still don't know whether the chains will be picking these reprints up. But at least they are available online, for tose who need them. On Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 7:44 PM, Marc Rikmenspoel <marcrik@gmail.com> wrote:
