My favourite current series is Simon Scarrow Eagles series. It’s a buddy action movie in book form set in Roman times. And I have loved every book of it. Sent from my iPhone

I've been enjoying the Murderbot series by Martha Wells, starting with "All Systems Red". The series name turned me away for a while, but it's not what it sounds like. However, it is sci-fi rather than fantasy. Definitely a recent favorite. Steve On 7/12/24 8:52 PM, Paul Uecker wrote:
I highly enjoyed the Malazan Books of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. He cites Glen Cook as a huge influence, and I can see it in several of the characters.
The series takes place in a world that he shares with fellow author Ian Cameron Esslemont. They are archeologists and anthropologists who created the world and many of the characters during their role-playing game sessions. They have both completed series in the setting, I believe totalling 16 books, and both have other series in the world in progress as well as several stand-alone books.

MurderBot is an excellent suggestion. I second it. It starts in short fiction, so you'll know if you like it. The late, great David Drake's "Lord of the Isles" series is epic fantasy in a meticulously build world with very Classical Western roots. Drake knew his source material. His RCN series is good SF of a adventure story vein. I'll always recommend Lois McMaster Bujold. Her style is nothing like Glen Cook's, save that they both have complelling characters. She might be the best author of the last 50 years. I'm a little bummed, actually. I was CERTAIN the next Black Company book woyld beva young-Croaker prequel. This was based on a Croaker quote, in Port of Shadows, about "a pitiless rain" being a quote from his childhood. A thin reed to hang my hopes on, I know.
