MurderBot is an excellent suggestion. I second it. It starts in short fiction, so you'll know if you like it. The late, great David Drake's "Lord of the Isles" series is epic fantasy in a meticulously build world with very Classical Western roots. Drake knew his source material. His RCN series is good SF of a adventure story vein. I'll always recommend Lois McMaster Bujold. Her style is nothing like Glen Cook's, save that they both have complelling characters. She might be the best author of the last 50 years.
