I'm very fond of Butcher's Dresden series! But one of the things that I particularly like about it is the Grand Arc: It's gradually telling a very large story. Also, Dresden (the character) changes in a way that Garrett doesn't: we see Dresden progress from
a down-and-out starting-his-career stage to one of the most powerful people around (with a thumb in every supernatural machination).
The story-telling improves after the first two or three. I suggest giving it more of a try.

At some point Jim Butcher's Dresden Files were recommended if one liked Garrett (who doesn't?) It took me a few years but I'm halfway through the first Dresden book, and while pretty good, I'd take Garrett/Cook over Dresden/Butcher every time.
Am I missing something?
