Butcher’s enjoyable and all, but if you’re a Cook fan and you haven’t read the Malazan Book of the Fallen or Jhereg series, you had better get your priorities straight my friend! ;)

DF is excellent. It ramps up in quality and complexity as it goes. It starts getting really good at book 4.

The Eddie LaCrosse books by Alex Bledsoe are another great example of an investigator in a fantasy world, but they're a little darker and more travelling adventurer than city boy.

If anyone is looking for a readalike for Black Company, try the First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie (The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, Last Argument of Kings). It leans into the grimdark but has a similar dual focus on individual characters and world politics.

Thanks for the preview. I’ll stick with Garrett.
Happy Trails.

Garrett is a normal PI in a magical world.

Dresden is a magical PI in a normal world.

The genres are similar but nit the same.  But the Dresden Files are very good.  Five a couple of books to get its legs.

There's a real tone shift as of Changes.  That might be a goid stopping point forva lot of people.

The short story collections are good, but contain Spoilers for the novels.

At some point Jim Butcher's Dresden Files were recommended if one liked Garrett (who doesn't?)  It took me a few years but I'm halfway through the first Dresden book, and while pretty good, I'd take Garrett/Cook over Dresden/Butcher every time.    Am I missing something?
