I'd Like to Share A Gigapan...
Dear fractinters, Hey, take a look at the following URL to see a really interesting Gigapan! The URL is: http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=21222 let´s make a fractal "contest" at gigapan.org :). Cheers, Guy

I really like the concept of zooming into an image like this, but it sure looks "blocky" and blurry if you go to deep with the scroll zoom.

Speaking of fractal contests, what happened to the web pages where the "Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest" for 2006 and 2007 were being displayed?? All that is left is an empty directory space: http://www.fractalartcontests.com/2006/exhibit.php and http://www.fractalartcontests.com/2007/
Have been trying to get to the developer's web pages, and the down-loadable files there, but keep getting an error message about not being able to get to the server. Been this way for at least two days now (maybe more for all I know). Nothing for the Domain Name at: http://www.fractint.org/ It seems to no longer be working. Is there a mirror available that is not on that server?
Yes, it seems to be down, but you can try: http://www.fractint.net http://twegner.dyndns.org/fractint -----Original Message----- Have been trying to get to the developer's web pages, and the down-loadable files there, but keep getting an error message about not being able to get to the server. Apparently Damien Jones' server is not functioning, or he has forgot to pay his Internet connection fee. Because, all of the email discussion lists, all of the Domain Names hosted, and anything else run from there stopped working around midnight (CST) of April 28th. What is rather interesting is the fact that Frederik moved the UF domain away from Damien's server to his own location just a matter of days before. Did he have "insider knowledge" of what was going to happen?? Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/
Paul,
Apparently Damien Jones' server is not functioning
Correct, due to a hard drive that was becoming more and more damaged and that, due to more pressing matters, I did not have time to deal with. There are actually some things more important than fractals and web sites.
or he has forgot to pay his Internet connection fee.
Come now Paul, that's just speculation on your part. And wrong too, since the bill is paid automatically and I personally know the host; he would call me if there was a problem with the billing before shutting me off. But it was a hardware failure in any case.

That's true. Email service has been restored, and access to web sites is partially restored, at least for now, but the underlying faulty hardware has not yet been replaced.
What is rather interesting is the fact that Frederik moved the UF domain away from Damien's server to his own location just a matter of days before. Did he have "insider knowledge" of what was going to happen??
Traffic for Frederik's site has been growing steadily and for some time he's been contemplating moving his site to a different host. At the same time, I've become increasingly busy professionally and have not had the same amount of time to attend to hosting needs. Since neither of these trends seems likely to change, we both recognized a couple of weeks ago that it was time for ultrafractal.com to new hosting. So yes, in a sense, he had inside knowledge, because I hosted him for ten years and I do actually tell him what's going on. You, on the other hand, do not have inside knowledge. I've been pleased to be able to provide hosting to many fractal-related projects over the years; I started doing it when decent hosting was difficult to come by and/or expensive. Hosting is now very easy to come by, and I no longer have the time to do what I used to do. I'm content with my role changing because I know nothing lasts forever. --Damien

Tim Wegner's own mirror is working: http://twegner.dyndns.org/fractint/ As of how up to date it is I don't know. Fractint 20.4 patch 9, at least, is there. Regards, Gerald

I too like enjoy seeing these "exploration" type zooms, but agree about the quality once someone reaches the end of the maximum zoom. I have seen this technique done with "old master" paintings, and the result is much better than these two examples of fractal graphics. So I can only assume that either the original image had flaws to begin with, or the process used was different (and not as good). Anyway, still worth visiting and playing with the zoom. I agree with you .. so let´s try to make it better ;-).

sorry for that late answer, my old WinXP-PC crashed 3 days ago. Got a new vista machine now but fractint and other old DOS programs don´t run anymore.. You´re right, that fratal had to be uploaded as .jpg with a pretty high compression factor. Anyway, a deep zoom in Fractint is much better than any gigapixel-sized .jpg!

maybe one could re-generate the best fractals of that former contest in a very large size (that takes a lot of time, 50 Megapixel = minimun size) and opload them to te gigapan.org site :).
Cheers, Guy
I have a hard drive crash on the server. All the data is backed up, but until I can get a replacement drive in the server there is nothing I can do to restore it. And I've been absolutely slammed with real work for two months straight. Most of that has cleared today, though, so I think I can get this resolved in the next few days. --Damien Maryetta Campbell wrote:
