Hi There, After a very long time during which I acquired a new computer, new email address (and two new knees! ) I thought I would see what the Fractint crowd were up to. Even in the first digest I received I see a couple of names I know..... great! I have a question.... I haven't tried it to see but my PC is now running XP pro (service pack2)... will I be able to run Fractint on it? Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)
Dorothy, it's good to see you back. I wondered how you were faring. I have WinXP Pro with SP2 and my Fractint is running just fine. I don't put it through the rigorous paces that the old pros here do, but haven't run into any problems with it at all. Going back to my corner now... Not with any good resolution at all and almost no chance of palette rotation. Do you have the older set of Wihn98se Installation disks? see If you can use them to setup an alternate partiton to run Fractint in. Sorry for the bad news. P.S. : The new knees, was the reason you has them implanted Arthritic, Diabetic. I'm both and am beginning to have trouble with my knees and thus the question. T H A N K Y O U James R. Hi Jim, No I never had Win 98... went from win95 to XPpro. I thought there was a way to tell XP to behave as if it were another version for some programmes?
P.S. : The new knees,
I'll answer off list about this.... but it is worth it! Grin Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)

Yes !! :-) But as to which video-modes will work correctly is another matter. Sometimes only the lower resolutions will display without problems. And if the image may not show as it should under a higher resolution, it will still save the GIF file as it really should appear. If you do need to use a lower resolution to view the generated image, there is always the option of disk-rendering to get the higher resolutions. Wyszkowski's Second Law: Anything can be made to work if you fiddle with it long enough. On that note, try right-clicking on the icon that you start FRACTINT with. I don't know about the pro version, but in the version I was playing with, I had to disable EMS and XMS (forcing FRACTINT to use disk at a small performance penalty on large imajez), unless I wanted FRACTINT to stall completely. Somehow, it wouldn't get a time slice, because Windows thot that it was waiting for the keyboard (and touching the keyboard is usually the last thing on my mind during large renderings), but only when EMS and XMS were enabled.
