Re: [Fractint] You know what I would like...
I'd prefer an Android version, myself. ;) IIRC, someone on the list had DOS Fractint running on a tablet(?) via a DOS emulator. I'd think it be doable on a phone. That probably wouldn't meet Apple design guidelines, tho. David W. I got Fractint running on my (now ancient and needing an upgrade) Samsung Galaxy S3. It involved an emulator and required installing a different keyboard. I first reported this in February 2013: This is completely crazy, but I installed a dosbox app on my Samsung Galaxy S3, copied fractint onto the phone, and was able to run Fractint! I'm not saying the user experience is acceptable, especially with the awkwardness of going back and forth to the onscreen keyboard, which blocks the screen in landscape mode, but that it works at all is a minor miracle! The android dosbox app was the free aDosbox. I may just dig deep and get a $4 DosBox app that is reputed to be better. I vaguely recall, but didn't report this to the list, that I also installed a new keyboard ("The Hacker's Keyboard") in order to be able to use all the keystrokes Fractint needs. Running Fractint under Android works but I wouldn't say it's practical for any actual work. Someone who is a more fanatic Fractint user than me might prove otherwise. Tim
Years ago there was a DOS emulator for iOS. It was called iDOS and it did work for FractInt. It violated Apple's terms of service for allowing changeable executable code and was removed. I read the reason was that Apple didn't want to have something on the app store that could allow someone to write malware. I managed to grab it in the few days when it first came out. I announced it here on the FractInt list at the time. Like Tim said it wasn't very practical to use on a small screen. -- Mike Frazier www.fracton.org
