FOTD -- December 13, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results when 1.6 negative parts of Z^3 are combined with 2.4 negative parts of Z^2 and C is added on each iteration. The resulting parent fractal is a Mandelbrot set with some extra stuff added mostly along the X-axis. Today's scene lies in some of this extra stuff that is just starting to sprout along the positive X-axis. The rating of a 7 might be a bit liberal. The image really is a bit too chaotic and the colors too disorganized for maximum effect. But I kind of like it anyway, with its preponderance of grays, so the rating of 7 will remain. The name "Moth-Eaten Fractal" came about when I realized that the thing was full of holes, like an old woolen sweater than has hung in the closet too many months with no moth repellant. The calculation time of over 22 minutes is admittedly slow, but may be cut to 14 minutes by rendering the image with the passes set to 'g'. Doing so however will cause some loss of accuracy. The temperature reached a mild enough 50F 10C here at Fractal Central on Sunday, but a steady rain fell all day, spoiling the brief respite from the chill. The fractal cats seemed uncon- cerned.
