FOTD -- February 23, 2012 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The name of today's image, "Barely There", refers to the parent fractal, which certainly is the least promising parent of all time. To create this parent I combined 20 negative parts of Z^(-0.2) with 2 negative parts of Z^(-5.2) and added (1/C) on each iteration. Ignoring the unattractive colors, this parent is nothing more than a tiny, partly open circle with a speck of a valley inside it. At first glance, this tiny bit of valley appears to have little potential, but being stubborn, I checked its depths anyway. To my surprise, I found today's scene lurking at a depth of over 7*(10^11). The muddy, unpleasant colors around the edges are an intentional contrast to the brilliant pink shades inside the spiral circle and its smaller attached spirals. I feel that I went a bit too far in muddying the outside colors however, which holds the rating to a un-notable 7. The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes is admittedly slow, but here is where the FOTD web sites charge to the rescue. The temperature of 54F 12C just added to the spring-like atmosphere. The fractal cats spent most of the afternoon sleeping peacefully in the sun, but grew a little testy whenever the sun ducked behind one of the small passing clouds.
