FOTD -- December 16, 2011 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image reminds me of some huge exotic tropical flower, so I named it "Stream of Ideation". (The connection is admittedly vague.) The parent fractal was created when, on each iteration, I subtracted 11 parts of Z^(2.1) from 11 parts of Z^(+1.9), then added straight (C). This parent is a slightly undersized almost- Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees so that its west end faces east. I call it an 'almost' Mandelbrot set because of its two obvious differences. The most obvious difference lies just beyond the large minibrot on the eastward-facing main stem, where the stem breaks into two branches, each going its own way but perfectly mirrored by the opposite branch. Another difference exists at East Valley, in this case on the west side of the main bay, where an extra bud has mysteriously appeared in the interior of the valley. Today's image does not lie in this extra bud, though it is very tempting to see what exists there. The image lies on the outside of East Valley, where the details are interesting enough. (This does not mean I am totally ignoring the inside of the bud. Tomorrow is another day for another fractal.) The usual minibrot lies at the center of image, with its shape obscured by the active inside fill of 'bof61'. I used this active fill because half of today's image consists of 'inside' stuff. The rating of an 8-1/2 includes the usual half-point bonus for the coloring, which really makes the image. The calculation time of 4-2/3 minutes borders on slowness. IMO, it is a fair price to pay for the image however. Much of this time may be saved by visiting the official FOTD web site at: <http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html> and viewing the finished image there. A high-resolution version of the image is posted at: <http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html> The original, now classic, FOTD web site may be accessed at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A mix of clouds and sun and a temperature of 48F +8C made for an acceptable but slightly boring day here at Fractal Central. We're still waiting for the snow to arrive that will bring a white Christmas. Unfortunately, it does not appear that any snow is in sight. The fractal cats were unconcerned about the lack of snow. They spent much of the day trying to compromise on who gets to sleep on the scratching post and who gets the new chair. Nicholas chose the chair before Cassie could make a choice, leaving her with the scratching post. We the people spent the day doing routine things, thinking about the coming holidays and making minor preparations. One thing we never need to think about is the FOTD, which appears on about 9 days out of 10. To prove my point, the next FOTD will be the one for Dec. 17, though with an antiquing trip always possible on Saturdays, do not be surprised if it is late. Until when- ever, take care, and did God create Man or did Man create God? Or are these simply two different ways of saying the same thing? I'd be curious to know what systems folks use to run fractint. My quick survey, with the caveat that I have not run Fractint much in the last 10 years, so some of you are MUCH more expert ... 1. I can run fractint pretty well in DOSBOX under Windows 7 64 bit. In fact in runs really well, I just noticed that the emulated CPU can be sped up. Mouse works. 2. Runs (barely) in a Win98 VirtualBox virtual machine under Windows 7 64bit. Need to experiment more. 3. Runs really well under Windows 98 on an old machine. 4. Runs in F3 mode under Windows XP, better in DOSBOX. Tim

Runs very well in DOSBOX under Debian Lenny 32-bit. Haven't tried it on Debian Sid 64-bit yet. I should try a DOS VM under Oracle VirtualBox, I think it provides more control over what video "card" the VM sees.
2. Runs (barely) in a Win98 VirtualBox virtual machine under Windows 7 64bit. Need to experiment more.
Never tried that.
3. Runs really well under Windows 98 on an old machine.
On an old machine (no longer around), it would hang the machine. Fighting with W98 over the display hardware the machine had. Ran perfectly well on the same hardware under OS/2 Warp. Could even run in the background while I used the system for other things. Never got that to work under W95 (which didn't have the display hardware conflict that W98 had) but W95 wasn't any good at multitasking.
4. Runs in F3 mode under Windows XP, better in DOSBOX.
Runs fine under Windows XP running under Oracle VirtualBox running under 32-bit Linux. Didn't have to use F3 mode, just started up the XP VM, opened a CMD window, and ran fractint. Rendered an image at 800x600, didn't try anything higher. Of course, the Linux native XFractint runs fine, too. I primarily use XFractint. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community

Tim, I have never been able to get Fractint to run natively in XP. I run it (rarely) using Microsoft's Virtual PC, but it is very slow. However, I just recently got a new PC with Windows 7 64 bit. Fractint seems to runs fine in DosBox but it is also very slow. I know that you can speed up the CPU cycles in DosBox, so I will have to fool around with that to see if I can speed it up. Speed up is easily done and dramatic. The more I use Fractint in dosbox the more I like it. You can put the settings you want in dosbox*.conf. Tim

All the images I generated to create Jim's FOTDs, and just about anything else I wanted to create with FractInt, were done on a Windows-98 SE system (which still runs quite well for such things). I can run FractInt under Windows-XP as long as I render to disk, since the graphics card on that machine does not support VESA. I have used FractInt with Windows Vista 64-bit with DOSBOX, but it is a tad too slow for what should happen with dual quad-cores (Xeon X5482 @3.2GHz and 16-GB of RAM). I will stay with the Win-98 system for FractInt. :-) Sincerely, P.N.L. -------------------------------------- Why do most folks hate cynics so much?
