FOTD 04-02-07 (Garden of Creation [No Rating)
FOTD -- February 04, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For a change, today's image has been given a name. After a moment's pondering I named it "Garden of Creation". A whimsical set of parameters set the stage for today's fractal effort, which unlike the origin sometimes attributed to the universe, definitely had a creator. The universe came into being because it could be no other way. Whether that can be considered creation depends on one's individual philosophy. There are many creation stories among the world's many cultures, not the least of which is the story of the Garden of Eden. Today's image gives a fractal peek at that primordial garden of perfect happiness. We see trees of the most fantastic kind bearing unearthly fruit ready for the picking. I have not yet spotted the two dwellers in the garden, but I assume they are in there somewhere. Though I did give the image a name, I declined to give it a rating. But this does not mean it is in any way inferior. The render time of a brief 3-1/4 minutes is short enough for the most impatient. Those with balky computers may view the garden on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Crystal blue skies, a biting wind, and a temperature of 30F -1C made it chilly today here at Fractal Central. The next few days are due to be even colder. The fractal cats were quiet. As long as they have their heat, they do not concern themselves with outdoor conditions. My day was very busy. The fractal is serendipitous. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and why am I myself? Could it be mere definition? Just wondering why you link "balky computers" to AMD's website? Fractint has run very happily for many years on a long line of AMD processors - the current one is a Sempron 3000. Much faster than any of the Intel processors I've had! -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community
Good question. I'm puzzled by the fact that the FOTD at Paul's site is rife with these links, while the one that arrives into my personal mailbox is completely free of them. Is this a case of a "text only" receive choice? John W. P.S. my AMD Athlon 64 x2 is a hummer! You realize that someday there will be processors capable of making Fractint's Deep Zooming fast, too ... John W. wrote:

Except that deep zooming would also expand beyond its current limit of 10^1600 or so, if someone doesn't already have the code to do it sitting out there. I'm guessing here, but, if it's not been done already, it would not be a big step to go to true 'arbitrary precision' with no limits. The computers will never keep up because Math is bigger than Physics. Think of how big the whole basic mandelbrot image done at the current limits of Fractint's deep zooming would be. This is something that could be specified in Fractint and a bit of scripting now. Without compression and quantum computing that is obviously an image the entire universe, as we know it, would not even be able to store. I think we lose sight of just how small a fraction of the parent fractal a zoom of even modest degree represents. Mike

Maybe so, maybe not.

They probably already do, in some fractal math geeks collection. Although I suspect that adding true 3D fractals to Fractint would be where more people want to put their processor speed.

True. Or at least bigger than the memory limits of processors.

Don't hold your breath, but there's a small outfit down the road from here that is threatening to show a 16-qubit quantum computer in Los Angeles next month! John W. (in Vancouver, Canada)

I saw that article, too. I could picture a fractal putting a quantum computer into an infinite loop! -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community
