FOTD -- August 01, 2005 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's FOTD we bid a temporary farewell to the Mandelbrot set and return for a while to the MandelbrotMix4 formula for a view of the fractal that results when various portions of Z^(-1.5) and Z^(-6.5) are combined and (1/C) is added. I will not try to give a detailed description of the indescribable parent fractal, which is actually several separate Mandeloids, one a sprawling, shapeless thing with numerous valleys and buds, the other a fairly routine M-set. Today's scene is found in an inconspicuous location on the west edge of the shapeless thing. It has been partially evaporated by a large escape radius, resulting in the sea-shell like effect. The name "Pyroclastic Fractal" has no relation to the actual appearance of the image. It is simply a phrase that came to mind while I was studying the image. The coloring could stand some improvement, which is why I could rate the image no higher than a 6. The render time of 4-1/2 minutes is quite reasonable for such a complicated image. The 6 hours they spent in the yard seemed to pass in the twitch of a whisker. Very little tuna was needed to give them a near perfect ending to the day. Today is starting much the same.
