Fractint for Windows and Multifrac_10
Versions 1 to 7 work well with the windows version. In multifrac_8 I added some addtitional code and variables which were needed for the reset commands which handle the transitions between the participating programs. They are resposible for the lack of chaotic portions and supply joint centers in images done with the latest edition. Versions 8 to 10 produce a "Buffer Overrun" as soon as they are loaded and Fractwin crashes instantly. Therefore only users running clean dos can load multifractal, only a few are left. I run multifractal also in the DOS Shell but I need a modified XP Version without net services. I?m sorry to say, that Richard refuses to increase the internal buffer, possibly only 1 line in the source code "STACKSIZE 7684 ; was 7172" and then recompile it. My bugreport is dated Aril 19, 2011 and when I sent a reminder was told to issue a new one, that?s all. The source code is available from http://iteratedynamics.codeplex.com. Can anybody help, maybe Jonathan ? I can imagine some more activity in the forum wouldhelp it survive a little bit longer Albrecht

With my current (7 year old) laptop, I can run your formula using Fractint in a command prompt under XP (a window, not shelling to DOS). The ability to run Fractint like this is dependent upon how well the Windows drivers are integrated with the hardware. I've had some computers not work above 320x200 resolution.
I´m sorry to say, that Richard refuses to increase the internal buffer, possibly only 1 line in the source code "STACKSIZE 7684 ; was 7172" and then recompile it. Sorry, no I can't. I don't have the C/C++ compiler that Rich uses. Even if he were to recompile his source for you, you may find that the images are not exactly the same as with the DOS version because of the differences between the C formula parser and the Assembly formula parser. Jonathan
Jonathan,
you may find that the images are not exactly the same as with the DOS version because of the differences between the C formula parser and the Assembly formula parser. sorry, to read that. Sofar I noticed that the outer parts of a 1600/1200 dos image are missing, some images dont generate at all, screen stays black. So I´ll remove Fractwin and stick to the dos shell. As far as I know only NV cards have a vesa mode capable of high resolution. Can you give us some tips how to maximize the memory available? On the memory page of the PIF properties I set every item to automatic, maybe some improvement is possible? Thank you As this is an extraordinary one I enclude a par, the image deserves a close look. The video card I am using is an ATI.
Can you give us some tips how to maximize the memory available? On the memory page of the PIF properties I set every item to automatic, maybe some improvement is possible?
I found that setting expanded memory to none leaves more far memory available internal to Fractint. The other settings at Auto are fine. This still doesn't provide enough memory to run your formula in disk video mode without using debug=4200. Can you explain why you need to run XP without net services? Are you loading TSR programs? Jonathan

Jonathan _______________________________________________ I did that a long time ago as I wanted a fast and safe XP edition without the slowdowns and interruptions by antivirus, firewall and network activities, like the updating terror - and a fractint without pixel errors. I got all that. Of course I only need root updates for xp. All services except ASP.Net and DNS client are set to local and disabled if possible. Sofar all software is running w/o problems, games only local which I regard as an advantage. In vesa mode all resolutions incl 1600/1200 are available and I even have some free resources so I can run the newdos commander to start fractint. No TSR programs. In my regular XP edition I cant run multifractal_10 either, version 9 is ok.

There's a difference between "I don't have time to work on it" and "I refuse to work on it". It's open source and the development environment needed is freely available.
