spanky fractal database problems
There were several bad power-bumps on site over the Christmas break and it took a toll. After about spinning almost continuously for 20 years, the system disk is showing a hardware failure. I'm not sure what this means in the long term, as I may be able to build another, but it won't happen anytime soon. I'll be away from the site until February. It may be time to retire the system. All things must pass! Noel Giffin

If you are in need of a machine (or parts from them), I have a couple of dozen lying around at the moment. Just let me know if I can be of assistance. Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/

You are to be commended for maintaining such a wonderful resource all these years! Thanks!
Is Damien's spanky.fractint.org mirror an up to date copy? How big is the the spanky website?
Tim

I'm not sure when Damien stopped mirroring spanky but there are quite a few minor discrepancies. I have it backed up on a linux machine and it is about 423 Megabytes. Damien used to Rsync to it. It would compress a little bit in a tar/gzipped archive but not a lot due to the large image/text ratio. Cheers, Noel
I just want to thank Noel for hosting Spanky. It holds a place in my heart because my first ever use of the internet was at an internet café downloading a new version of Fractint. And a thanks as well to Tim and all the others who made Fractint, a gift which keeps on giving. Mike

Was it being mirrored at all, or was it just a one time copy to create a second site ??

Would you consider burning that to a CD and shipping it via mail, or creating an ISO for downloading from an FTP location. ?? I can setup an alternate site as well, either temporarily or permanent. Or if need be, establish a permanent location if the Spanky server is going away. Hi Paul, It was being mirrored using rsync for awhile. My linux server is still configured as an rsync server for the spanky data, but it was restricted access. I could probably open it up for a short time, or I could make a disk and mail it to Paul. Whatever happens, I have to do today or it won't happen until February as I'm away from work until then. Thanks for all the support. Noel Paul N. Lee wrote:

Since there is a current problem in even getting to the server through the web: http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/fractint.html Some other location where the files can exist might need to be arranged so they may be downloaded from my location.

Might be better to burn a disk and mail it. I can reimburse you for the expense afterwards, or you can send it COD, either way is fine by me. I will send you and address to use shortly after this posting.
