FOTD 17-04-11 (Multiple Glories [No Rating])
FOTD -- April 17, 2011 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With nothing better to do on Saturday, I started playing with the monumental multifractal_10 formula. To begin I set all the parameters to zero and all the functions to ident, which means no function. My intention was to see the default starting-point fractal, but the result was a glorious blank screen. Then I turned on the randomizer and randomized both the para- meter values and functions. Again, no luck. So I set the para- meter randomizing range to 10000, and finally a few hints of images appeared on the screen. Nothing worth a FOTD. Next, I turned to one of the posted images, set the center coordinates to 0,0 and turned off the parameters and functions one at a time until the screen turned blank. When I started turning things back on, today's image then appeared as kind of a perpetual image that is immune to function and many parameter changes. I'm not sure that it can be called a default starting point, but it's still a reasonably attractive image, well worth FOTD status. One thing I noticed is that the multifractal_10 formula is basically a stand-alone fractal generating program. The name "Multiple Glories" is more a wish than a fact, but I'm sure the formula has many glories in it. If only I could deter- mine how the bring them out. Since I did basically nothing to create the image but turn things off, I could give it no rating. Luckily, the image has XY-symmetry, which cuts the calculation time to a zippy 44 seconds. The multifractal_10 formula is so long that I did not include it in the parameter file, but the formula is readily available on the Fractint list. The finished image is available, and without calculation, on the currently active FOTD web sites at: <http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html> and <http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html> The latter site has the image in high-definition. The entire history of the FOTD from April 1997 through October 2010 is available at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Saturday brought all-day heavy rain to Fractal Central. The wetness and chilly temperature of 50F 10C was of minor concern, especially to the fractal cats, who never have been out in the rain and probably never will be. The day of the humans was on the slow side. We could have done more on the web site, but enough is enough, and we'll have ample opportunity to work like fiends on the web site in the upcoming days. As for the next upcoming fractal, it will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, sleep well, and dream happy dreams of sugar-fractals. P.S. I just found a kind of multifractal_10 instruction manual on the list. Maybe it will give a better understanding of the formula.
