Interesting. I have a new laptop but for most things prefer my old computer with Windows 98 because it can run Fractint and some DOS games and it has the big monitor and I'm just used to it. I find the old computer runs the old stuff and the new computer runs the new stuff like music downloading and graphics and it's just simpler that way. Anyway, I don't have a firewall or virus software but have avoided problems, perhaps because I have an old version of Netscape rather than IE. Or maybe just lucky or stupid. I never download porn or click on anything that I have not actively gone to. I just ran all that and it came out healthy. Kathy Roth John Wilson wrote:

If you use the Pro version of ZoneAlarm, then there might be some validity your statements above. That is because it has a SPAM detector which does need constant updates, just like SpyBot, Ad-Aware, etc... But the FREE version of ZoneAlarm that used to run on Windows-98, which recently (on 06/16/06) was no longer being upgraded, does not need constant "DAT" type files like the detectors of spyware and virus scanners. The actual updates that came out with ZoneAlarm were very sparse, maybe once every 3 to 5 months on the average. The last one for the Win-98 version came out on 03/28/2006, before that it was on 11/22/2005. Therefore, the firewall still has its uses on older Windows systems. Hi all. Thanks to all for the outpouring of advice and data. I am fully occupied this weekend with my 30th (?!?) anniv. high school reunion, a lot of housecleaning, and a couple of barbecues, so will have to digest it all later. I suppose the best thing to do would be to run a second computer for my legacy apps, but I don't have the space for it. For now I will have to deal with one system, config TBD. I think I will have to stick with Windows 98se, since when running under Windows (as opposed to a DOS boot) FractInt has some funny graphic quirks, my image format converter's memory access is very limited, and many games won't run. On a related topic, I am looking for advice on how to fix a specific problem related to the upgrade. Being unable to log on to Microsoft's site, I sent an e-mail to support but have heard nothing. When Explorer 6.0 crashes I get the following error: EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL at 0167:78015ca2. I checked into this when I was at work, and the DLL is related to Visual C++ as a check for writing data beyond allocated memory. It is for this reason that I believe this is a FAT issue. The automatic upgrade did not overwrite that DLL, probably because it was patched and the file in my C:\Windows\System folder is more recent than the upgrade. I have tried to manually extract the upgrade DLL from its 98se Upgrade Disk cabinet but Windows refuses, probably for the same reason. Thanks again, Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul N. Hi, I don't think that is a FAT issue, but I can tell you how to extract the DLL Get the file out of the cabinet with WinZip or similar, it will be called MSVCRT.DL_ . In a dos window, type 'extract' it will list instructions, but it is usually just 'extract blah.dl_ blah.dll' Hope this helps, but make sure you keep copies of file that you overwrite, in case it gets worse Paddy

And, if Windows doesn't want to let you replace the DLL because it's in use ... boot from a DOS floppy disk, then do the above process. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community

I believe the most current version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, within an upgraded Win-98 system, is 6.10.8924.0, and should be 290,869 bytes in size. You most likely will need to load it into the C:\Windows\System\ directory path while booted to DOS, instead of from Windows Explorer. If you have problems extracting it from the CAB file, then you can retrieve it from this location: http://home.att.net/~Fractals_5/MSVCRT.zip Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/

Hi Paul and all. Well I'll be damned. I seem to have finally fixed my problem, and in a hideously simple manner. I did not install Partition Magic and un-FAT32. I did not backup all of my data and start from scratch. First, Paul, I downloaded the MSVCRT.Zip file from your link. Thank you very much. It turned out to be the one I had installed, but that's good knowledge anyway. I then noticed that the "read only" bit was set on the installed file. I thought: "I can't imagine that would have an affect on the function of the DLL, since it's only there to protect it from overwriting, alteration, or deletion." (Am I wrong about that?) So I turned it off, and, to be safe, restarted. I am now almost done downloading Media Player 9 from the Microsoft site, and the link appears rock-solid. And I can log on to eBay trouble-free. My guess is that the install process set the bit to protect it during the upgrade, and failed to remove it. Conjecture and instruction are invited. Regards, a grateful and much happier Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul N.
