Running Legacy Apps In Windows
With regard to the article in PC magazine, I don't see them listed, but here are a couple of programs which are recommended for running legacy games in WinXP and 2000Pro. I don't know if Fractint will work with them, I haven't had a chance to try it, but they do allow you to run games which require DOS. Dosbox version 0.65 Dosshell Mike Hughes

They are actually clickable images that will give the details: Tame 5.0 ($20, http://www.tamedos.com/ ) is the one essential tool for running text-based DOS applications in Windows XP. The main options, accessible from the top-left window icon, address typical DOS baggage like cursor shape and text stretching. DOSBox ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ ), an open-source project, is designed to run DOS games and other programs written to interact directly with hardware such as sound cards and video cards-behavior Windows doesn't allow. Note that the first screen you'll see shows the Help command. You'll need it Â- but the help is very clear. Mo'Slo; Mo'Slo Basic (evaluation); Mo'Slo Deluxe ($23); and, offering the most options and fixes, Mo'Slo4Biz ($25) ( http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/ ) for when your old program doesn't like fast PCs and you get a "Runtime error 200" message.
